1 out of 5 stars Problems with Nero 8 / Nero Vision 5   April 20, 2008

I have been using Nero products for many years, but never again.
Nero 8 works well until you come to edit DVDs using Nero Vision, when audio and visuals go out of synch. Customer services have been absolutely useless and take an age to respond. After many hours I have now reverted back to Nero 7 which works. I have been told by customer services that Nero Vision 5 is a little fussy and the problem resides with my source files - how come Nero 7,Roxio and Windows DVD maker have no problems with the same source files? I finally gave up when customer services suggested I pay for / download another programme to convert the files in to another format and then convert with Nero 8!!!

3 out of 5 stars One step forward - two steps back   April 8, 2008

I have used Nero on and off over the years. This is the third boxed version I have bought.
I had no good reason to upgrade from 7 it had served me well and at one point I thought i was going to have to go back to 7.
I had to contact Nero support twice who I have to say are quite effective if a little slow.
The program had a tendency to stop working and freezing. Much of it to do with clashes from previous versions and the problems with "Nero Filters" whatever that is.
It is now working and is pretty good. I still occasionally have start to reboot my system when the start smart program doesn't start.
I don't like the activation requirement. I don't like the Scout, but at the end of the day I'm going to sit it out, when it works , it works well.

1 out of 5 stars A useless resource hog   March 20, 2008

Well I've been using the trial version before going for the upgrade and I am so glad I did because I would have wasted my money.

It refuses to read other CDs / DVDs written with other software and stubbornly insists that discs that Nero burnt as multi-session are closed for good.

After 2 hours of trying to improve things by reinstalling it, watching is crash, and the main burning utility and the quick CD 'drop and drag' utility run the CPU usage up to 100% and then stop responding, crash again etc etc I can honestly say that this is the most useless piece of junk to be created for some years.

Forget it. You'll be happier. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars System Hogger, but I ain't complaining. =)   March 12, 2008

I think the Nero 8 s/ware is pretty awesome sauce so have awarded it 5* despite it being so heavy on system resources. Don't mind admitting I am quite an Audio perfectionist,*I extract audio files to WAV before burning and have created Master Discs for archival purposes and Listening discs for my entire, extensive music collection. =)* and Nero 8's quality and ease of use suits me well. Sony's CD Architect does have a slight edge when it comes to burning audio but not enough to stop Nero's user friendliness making it my usual programme of choice.

I have concentrated on Nero 8's audio burnng properties but it's a good performer in all departments, excelling at CD/DVD burning. As others have mentioned it is a big piece of s/ware and resource hungry *I don't agree it's such a serious bloat as some have suggested* but this is much reduced if you customise it when installing rather than just accepting the default settings. And it's such a good product this shouldn't really be a problem, quality is worth a bit of effort.

Back to Audio again. =) Nero does rip to WAV efficiently but to produce absolutely top quality cds i recommend extracting to WAV first with Exact Audio Copy s/ware, *the best extractor in existence, and it's FREE! Google it.* then burn files to disc in Nero. My recommendation for CD-R is definitely TDK Audio CD-R, not to be confused with the ones that can be bought on spindles, these are dedicated to audio and well worth the extra dosh. You may not want to do this for your whole music collection as i have but it's well worth it for your fave albums, just pump up the volume and hear the difference. =)

2 out of 5 stars No different from previous versions.   January 28, 2008

I think the only thing worth having that's new is the HDDVD/Blu-Ray support. If you just want to burn discs with Nero Burning Rom then don't bother as your old version 7, or even 6,5,4 will probably be just the same! This program never changes much and I can't believe they had the ordacity to claim that it's faster! It's simply too big (a modest instalation with only burning rom, back-it-ip, cover designer, express, vision and wave editior will set you back 1gb), too slow and not any different to the old one.
