Improved but still blighted by poor history July 22, 2008 OneCare has been a troubled product.
Its earlier iterations were blasted by reviewers for being a poor implementation of security products. The antivirus and malware protection in particular was independently tested and found to be one of the poorest performing applications there was.
This latest 3-user package apparently goes some way to address those concerns. A nicely put together, integrated security suite that brings all the functions of defence and maintenance into a userface which the non-expert user would find easy to manage. Compatible with Vista, it would certainly be something worth considering for casual computer users and for systems operated by younger members of the family.
However....
It is again this elephant in the corner issue of prior versions that blows it out of the water for me. Do I want to remove software I know is good, and substitute it for payware that may not perform as well?
Almost entirely worthless July 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Onecare fundamentally doesn't do anything that Vista (or XP, really) either doesn't do already, or you can't find highly suitable freeware alternatives for. Windows already includes a firewall, a disk defragger, various backup options, and an anti-phishing filter in IE 7. Of course, you can also add or remove programs yourself via the Windows Control Panel.
So paying for Onecare, which also costs 38 annually, is a bit of a waste of time, really. Interestingly, if you want to un-install it, you need to give a reason and take a short survey !
Fantastic for beginners. July 21, 2008 Windows Live Care is an all in one security suite, much like the ones that are being offered by McAfee and Norton. It offers the standard Antivirus and Firewall, as well as a Network manager and Computer Maintenance- in other words nothing that the other two don't do. What makes Live Care different seems to be its target audience; people that would rather not worry about managing the software, or beginners. Live Care will do everything, from updating itself to approving programs the the Firewall exception list (from a list of safe programs). It is incredibly user friendly- more so than any of its rivals, but if you want any sort of control, stick to McAfee or Norton.
As it says..... One Care.....it does it all....... July 21, 2008 The reason I installed One Care was my pc seemed to be slowing down and a friend of mine who knows more about the possible causes of this suggested my anti-virus and firewall may be responsible. Having completely removed them I then installed One Care and the difference in speed was immediately apparent. The product itself is moderately easy to set up - unless you know what you're doing then let the program select it's own settings and level of security. It automatically updates itself and seems to run effortlessly of its own accord in the background. The downside to this is that to renew the licence after 12 months appears to be more expensive than buying the complete package from new again ? A bit silly if you ask me...... As far as the fuctionality and ease of use of this goes, then I'd certainly give it a thumbs up....
Excellent July 21, 2008 This software has been protecting my PC for a while now and it's first rate. It doesn't slow down my PC and stops all sorts of bad viruses infecting my machine.
Well done microsoft.
