very disappointing May 16, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I had to return mine, as it didn't work at all using batteries and even using mains it was unreliable - sometimes cutting off for no reason. I bought another (from a different supplier) and the same thing happened, so this one had to be returned too. No way would I recommend this to anyone.
Liked it but the CD player breaks April 18, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I bought one of these after being impressed by one owned by a friend. It seemed ideal, the sound is fine for me and I really like the digital radio and the display. Can't see the point in FM but I suppose some might want it. The whole reason for going for this model for me though was for the integrated CD player - great I can listen to radio or CD in the kitchen! Trouble is that the beast no longer plays CDs, the player totally went after just two months. Chatting to the friend whose player I first coveted, it emerges that their CD player no longer works either. That's two out of two on the crap CD player front so disappointing. Like the radio though.
Jug Kettle styling and sound quality (or lack of) to match April 10, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have re-written this review now that I have owned this piece of kitchen clutter for a year or so. I gave it 3 stars at first based on reasonable price and a decent DAB radio. I've changed my mind. 1 Star is my new rating (though I don't seem to be able to change that). In my original review I compared this item to my 10 year old portable Sony CD player, which didn't have a DAB rad but it left this thing standing as far as sound quality was concerned. This thing sound hollow and muffled like a bad car stereo. It lacks clarity and depth and I wouldn't insult my CD collection by playing them on this fartbox. It is supposed to play CD-R but it doesn't. So if you burn your own CD's, forget it. It's badly designed from a practicality point of view too. And now I've owned it for a while I find that the DAB radio is rubbish too. It bubbles and cuts out regularly - and of course this always happens when you least want it to and there's sweet FA you can do to get a signal again until it decides to play ball again. This isn't because I live in a poor area for digital signals, I live in Liverpool and other DAB's work just fine. I will be replacing this thing soon, and if you're looking to buy a DAB radio/CD player move along... there's nothing for you here.
Fab DAB radio for bedroom or kitchen April 10, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For the price I believe this is a great piece of kit for your kitchen or bedroom. OK, you can't turn it off on the remote and the scolling text is a little difficult to read but other than that it is full of features and sounds great. It is amazing how much better football commentary sounds on Five Live on DAB than it does on MW! With an RDS FM tuner, CD player, battery or mains operation, headhone socket and cool looks, I recommend it!
Funky Little iPod-esque Boombox. October 10, 2006 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
As usual, Amazon over-estimate how long it'll take to get whatever you order - I got it within three days of ordering it. It's pretty sleek - looks like what you'd expect an Apple stereo/boombox to look like (if they do/did them).
The sound quality is pretty good for both the CD and the DAB radio (guess the DAB depends on your reception though) - check if you can get a DAB signal - I can't at home yet, but in here in Uni, it works fine. It looks and feels pretty sturdy and the "x-bass" feature is a bit of a gimmick really, but unless you get a proper sub, the bass is never gonna sound great. Will admit I haven't used the FM radio and unless you take it somewhere where there is no DAB signal, I doubt you'll use it either - the DAB quality is noticeably better than FM - will have to use FM when I take it home - even if the sound quality is bad then, it'll probably be down to the signal more than the radio I expect. Also, it's not that clear, but there's only 4 radio presets for DAB (and also 4 for FM) - 8 in total.
The only fault I can find is that there's no on/off button on the remote - so you have to get outta bed (bear in mind I'm a lazy student).
For 80-odd quid I'm pretty impressed with the sound quality and the looks of it and would definitely recommend it.
