looks good but September 28, 2008 Certainly looks the part but although the tuning is easy it is rather laborious to change stations. the sound quality is good but rarely use it as it is all rather a palaver to use!
The immovable object August 3, 2008 The battery life on this behemoth is so short that it becomes uneconomical to use it on anything other than mains. Which is fine because its too bloody big to carry around in any event.
I've also found that if you leave the batteries in with it switched OFF then they will be drained by the morning. Therefore the presetting of stations becomes a wasted exercise unless its permanently plugged in.
So if you want something that remains a fixture at the side of the room then this is fine. Sound quality not bad for mono.
If you want something more flexible look elsewhere.
Dear Sony
If you could just have included a rechargeable pack...

I'm extremely disappointed with this and have contacted Sony to tell them so.
I agree totally about the irritating tuning wheel which has to be clicked repeatedly instead of just turned. Tuning is slow and troublesome this way.
But the biggest flaw is the Mode selection. Basically it defaults to alphabetical though you have manual, favourite, latest and some others. Since It doesn't appear to keep your favourites stored despite repeatedly setting them up that option is useless; it always defaults to an autoscan of available channels followed by Alphabetical so starts playing BBC Asian Network unless you manually change the mode after switching it on. Great if your Asian I guess.
The manual doesn't explain any way of changing this behaviour. It would be great if the thing just started at the push of a button and went to the last station played; The 'Latest' mode has to be clicked to after turning on, meaning you need to spend about 10 seconds starting the damned thing instead of just 1.
Being able to change the default tuning mode at startup would make this useable. If its possible to do then it should be in the manual. With niether of these I would not recommend it to anyone.

Can't quite see how this radio has received such a low average. The design is basic, so more likely for use in DIY, than the bedroom. But this doesn't make the radio poor. Simple in design, layout and programming. The volume control is very smooth, and little distortion at full 'blow'. A single speaker may not be to everyone's cuppa, but this one is tight and clear. Yes, it's not perfect, but for the money, most people will spend, this is a good DAB. For this, it must be 8 or 9 in its group. So to redress the imbalance, I give 10.
Not up to Sony's usual standard March 9, 2006 41 out of 42 found this review helpful
I've been looking for the 'right' DAB radio for a while, and though I bought this, I still haven't found it. I want a quality DAB radio that runs on batteries. But with this, the battery life from a new set of Duracell’s (listening to a DAB station) seems to be around 3 hours. That's completely impractical and to my mind inexcusable. Side note: that’s at least £5 a time! Various design features could be much better: 1) The 'rotary' tuning knob doesn't actually rotate; it just clicks up and down. Why can't they have a proper 'scroll wheel' type knob similar to other Sony gadgets? 2) In a device this size there’s enough room to put a decent speaker, but on this unit the sound quality left me somewhat disappointed. 3) When running on battery power, the display backlight (necessary to see the display when tuning) only comes on when you press the light button (then only briefly). Clearly the intention is to save battery power, but they’ve got it all wrong, as this is negligible compared to the drain when listening in digital. The light should be on for longer and should come on when you power on. 4) Lastly (and I knew this when I bought it), it’s missing all the fancy features in rival products like the ability to pause or record (with a memory card plugged in). They missed an opportunity to sell more memory sticks. Most people look to Sony for premium products, this time they’ve missed the mark. It works on mains and looks alright though.
