Product Description
The Joby Gorillapod firmly secures your camera to just about anything- anywhere and everywhere! Unlike traditional tripods, the gorillapod doesn't require an elevated surface for you to take the perfect shot.

3 out of 5 stars gorillapod go go   July 20, 2008
not a bad product, but could be improved.
suction pad is only for a tripod-screw-less mobile phone for example and isn't exactly strong.
would have been nice to have a suction pad for a window instead.
grippy feet are good for wrapping around things but no good on your car's dash - unless it's made of wood or leather! slides all over the place on mine, so useless for a gps as illustrated in the advert.
carry some blu-tac with you perhaps! :)

3 out of 5 stars There's good news and bad news!!   July 14, 2008

I needed a small tripod on my holidays and whilst taking a fixed legged mini-tripod which was great on flat surfaces I wanted to try out this adjustable leg variety on my compact digital camers.

Ther pluses were that the legs were manageable and it is easy to attach your compact and then use the legs wrapped around, say the rear of a chair or bannister to get a shot where a fixed legged tripod could not. I used that a few times, but, since I use a Canon G9 compact, which is one of the heaviest compacts (if not the heaviest) the legs would not stay put foe longer then a few seconds. It was ok for a 2 second delayed shot but when I used the timer for 10 seconds to do a landscape shot I would need to be on my guard to catch the camera otherwise the legs would give way. I did use the tripod with a thinner Nikon compact and that worked ok. Problem was on the pack which cane with the tripod there is no indication of weight limit and I assumed that this tripod would support any compact - some of the pictures show it supporting a SLr which I think is somewhat misleading.

The good news therefore is that if you have a small Gorillapod should satisfy your needs. The bad news is if you use a high-end or larger compact, or use an additional flash unit, then the Gorillapod is lacking in support and either stand close or use the camera with any additional flash unit.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than you might expect.   June 25, 2008

There are four versions of the Gorrilapod
* Gorillapod GoGo for PDA, phones - max weight 275g
* Gorillapod Original for compact cameras - max weight 275g
* Gorillapod SLR - for light weight SLRs/DSLRs/Prosumer - max weight 800g
* Gorillapod SLR Zoom - For heavier SLRs/DSRs or Cameras with heavy lenses - max weight 3000g

This is a review of the SLR Zoom model - some other reviewers seem to be referring to the wrong model. Make sure you purchase the right model for your camera.

Unlike it's smaller siblings, the SLR Zoom does not come with a quick release mount. This is perfectly usable when you use the Gorillapod as a tripod. However I recommend getting hold of a quick release tripod head to accompany the Gorillapod.

The big differentiator of the Gorillapod though, is it's ability to be used as more than just a tripod. The flexible legs can be wrapped around objects to allow you to mount the camera in unusual places. For this reason you really need to make sure you get a ball head quick release tripod head - this will allow you to position the camera at any angle, regardless of the angle of whatever you have wrapped the Gorillapod around.

I have used my Gorillapod SLR Zoom with my Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm Lens - about 1.5kg. It's rock solid used as a tripod - I have not experienced any problems with the legs splaying out with the weight.
It's rock solid with the legs wrapped abound an object like the back of a chair or the top of a fence.

One word of caution, when you cut the string to release the Gorillapod from it's packaging, make sure you don't lose the tiny thread adaptor - you need this for the tripod head.

Thoroughly recommended- a great all round piece of kit - ideal for travelling too.

5 out of 5 stars Really nifty   June 24, 2008
The small version of the Gorillapod was bought for use with a compact digital zoom camera. It is small enough to fit in a pocket, light to carry and easy to fix the camera onto. It is practical, durable, flexible and versatile. It can easily be bent into all kinds of shapes to hold the camera just where you want it and fixes on to all kinds of things by twisting the legs around. Just the job if you don't want to carry a standard full-size tripod.
