Amazon.co.uk Review
The problem with vampires is that, usually, they can't go out in daylight. That means that, however menacing they might be after sunset, when morning rolls around again, the heroes can just dig 'em up and stick a stake in them. 30 Days of Night sidesteps the whole daylight problem by setting its story in Barrow, Alaska, a town which is so far north that during the winter, the sun doesn't rise for a month at a stretch. It's such a perfect setting for vampires that it's almost shocking no-one's thought of it before now.

30 Days of Night has another trick up its sleeve, too. Its vampires aren't gothic hedonists who enjoy their claret out of jewelled goblets. Nope, these are vicious, nasty, brutal creatures who'd snap your neck as soon as look at you. They look terrifying, all misshapen foreheads and far too many teeth, and the creepy shrieking noise they make only makes it worse; they seem entirely inhuman. Barrow's isolated, blizzard-stricken location makes for a literally chilling atmosphere even before the monsters show up.

The plot loses its way towards the end, and the inevitable triumph of the heroes stretches logic to its limits, but the setting is original enough to make up for that. 30 Days of Night isn't a film you'll forget in a hurry. --Catherine Haskins

5 out of 5 stars awesome vamp movie   November 15, 2008
This was a great movie; simple, action vampire film. I cant help thinking that they could have made more out of the story line though; the concept of vampires having a party in alaska is an intriguing one. I would not say that it is the best vampire movie of all time though...I saw some review say that (probably a review by Jonathan Ross)

2 out of 5 stars could have been so much better   November 6, 2008
30 days of night? well, actually it's more like 3......day one suddenly becomes day 18 (what happened in the intervening 17 days stuck in a freezing cold wilderness with no heat, energy and limited food? - Josh Hartnett grew a little beard....hmmmm) and then we move swiftly to days 29 and 30 (beard growth....check, no other ill effects from spending a month in said circumstance?.....check).

Now I know it's a vampire movie so suspension of disbelief is a requirement but to lose 26/27 days from a film which is set over 30 days is just ridiculous.

The other problem is the vampires themselves, they are just a bit.....well......crap really, yeah they look and sound good but they seem to be pretty hopeless, even though they outnumber the residents easily and have the advantage of superpowers and not being affected by the freezing weather (oh forgot, the residents dont seem to be affected either).

But the real issue with this? The end - one punch? is that what it took to kill the lead vampire? - ONE punch - that's pretty much the worst vampire in cinema history - even the ones in the Lost Boys were tougher than that! - It's a cop out, like the director couldnt think of any other way to end the film.

Throw in a unneccessary romantic subplot and you have a complete waste of 2 hours.

Should have been called '3 nights with some soft vampires in the snow'

Check out After Dark instead - 20 odd years old and way better than this nonsense. Actually, dig out The Lost Boys, that's better as well.

5 out of 5 stars Blood!   October 30, 2008
This is the best vampire film I've seen in quite a while, the market seems to be deprived of them at the moment. This combines vampires with action in an awesome way, there's plenty of blood, fire and explosions. If you're a gore hound, this is a must.

I was expecting this to be a load of rubbish but have to say it was awesome!!
Don't worry about the fact its based on a comic book as you don't need to be a reader of the comic to follow what the film is about.
This is the best vampire film I have ever seen (excluding Coppola's Dracula).
The stereotypical image of a vampire has truely been turned on its head & the creators have done to vamps what 28 days did to zombies. After all vampires are predators & there is nothing romantic about them.
The special effects are fantastic & the film is full of gore for avid horror fans.

2 out of 5 stars Passes the time.   September 27, 2008

Ok, I didn't give it too many stars but it was reasonable, it just wasn't that scary! I actually found the vampires pretty amazing looking and very different to the usual. I think the location worked so well, isolated, cold...it was grim but overall there wasn't a huge amount of action and a bunch of people sitting around for 30 days is a bit dull.
I thought that the ending was a real shocker and actually kind of moving. I thought it was worth watching the film just for the final scene.
