The Oldies are the Best January 24, 2008 I remember playing this when I were a lad, way back in t'eighties, and like all great games it hasn't changed at all.
It takes no time to put together, is brightly coloured, makes lots of noise and has loads of balls rattling about, so for a family with a three year old it's a winner from the start. If only it came in a bigger box so I could store it properly...
They are really cutting corners December 30, 2007 I have fond memories of Hungry Hippos as a child so I was very excited to play it again with my children. However, just as the reviewer before me has explained - this (like many other classics) has been "modernised" which is a polite way of saying "cheapened". You must put it together yourself and it's a lot less durable than the version I remember playing.
Other games that have been "modernised" include: 'Guess Who', 'Downfall' and 'Go for broke'.
Great Fun, don't think it will last long December 24, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Hungry Hippos is a terrific and simple game for families to play together - my kids (both under 4 years old) love it even though they are too young to understand the rules properly: simply launch the marbles into the arena and frantically press the button on your hippo to capture as many marbles as you can.
[This refers to the game bought new from a source other than Amazon.co.uk in Dec 2007] Be warned that Hasbro have changed the board from that pictured above (at the time of writing) so you may not receive quite what you expect: i) the Hippos are no longer mounted *on* the base, you need to attach them to the *edge* of the base yourself ii) once constructed the board (base+hippos) does not fit in the box so you have the choice: ii-a) never pack it away into its box when you are done playing with it ii-b) remove the hippos after every play with the very real risk that you will break them. This prevents a child from being able to put the game away themselves.
As a consequence of my experience with this and another modernized implementation of a MB game (Downfall) I am less inclined to buy other modern versions of "classic" MB games without first seeing them in the flesh.
Great fun! August 10, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This game is built to last! Very durable. Great fun for all ages as long as you watch the little ones that they dont swallow the little balls. Very popular choice in our house. It does get quite noisy though!
Fun and learning November 25, 2005 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
We have had this game for 5 years now - and, as a family, we still play it on a regular basis. It's great fun and can be used to teach counting to begin with - but be imaginative, buy some coloured marbles and each colour has a different point value to teach addition and multiplication. But above all - it is FUN, FUN, FUN!
