5 out of 5 stars Great place, excellent book   November 6, 2007

Chosen for its classic coastline and outstanding natural environment, Gower was the first Area of National Beauty to be designated in the United Kingdom. This is an authoritative, well written account of this highly interesting area. Johnathan Mullard knows his subject well from his former professional involvement in nature conservation of the area.
If you are keen to explore the topic and the locality, I recommend also seeking out an earlier work; The Natural History of Gower by Mary E. Gillham, 1977 (ISBN: 0905928008). The two volumes give a comprehensive insight into the flora and fauna of the penninsula.

This is the New Naturalist series at its best. Brilliantly written and illustrated, this book will evoke pleasing memories of Gower if you are familiar with it, and make you want to go there if you're not. A great book for anyone keen to know more of this area, its history and nature. Full marks to Jonathann Mullard - a naturalist writing for naturalists, but making Gower accessible to all.

5 out of 5 stars Superb   May 12, 2006

Right, so I am biased, given that we live here at the edge of the world in the Gower AONB. That notwithstanding, this is a superb book for the visitor and local alike, scholar or amateur. It is beautifully produced, with learned but eminently readable sections covering all of the natural history - human, animal, vegetable, and geological - of Gower; analyses of the past; and informed sections on the future environmental and land management of Gower. The illustrations are stunning, from its evocative linocut cover to the high quality colour photographs, maps and drawings which stud the pages. This is a treasury of pleasure and information for anyone who knows this beautiful corner of the British Isles.
