When I first seen the title of this book I grabbed it and run home to read it thinking this would be a "I just dont give a.. book" How wrong I was, it is supposedly a book in which the writer is not bothered about marriage, when she undoubtedly is. In fact I think that speaking as a single gal at the end I felt very depressed that i am single and still on the shelf.
Its literally an a-z of why she is single and it so irritatingly happens that she is single because of everyone else, nothing is her fault. Of course there is the annoying mum, selfish boyfriends and weird friends which are included in lots of chick lit novels but unlike the others where its funny this book drags on and i was impressed that i actually managed to finish it.
In the hands of another author this could be brilliant, dont be FOOLED by the title, i was angry that i wasted my money and was fooled into buying a self help book, this book went straight to a car boot sale!

3 out of 5 stars not married, to bother or not to bother ?   March 17, 2006

I was tempted to this book by the catchy title and hearing the author speak on radio 4, the book overall is good and does stretch readers with alot of facts about single women etc, it has a story round the central character Riley Gordon and her friends and family , including her difficult mother and her closeness with her late father, also many friends and relatives, love interests and travelling in her past. The annotations can be hard to follow at times. The book seems slow to start but gradually becomes a page turner and even though it is not my favourite book i felt compelled to see it through to the end. An interesting read, but really not quite what i expected which could be seen as either a positive or a negative !

I was surprised to read the favourable reviews of this book. I found reading it like walking through treacle - I persevered hoping for better to come. Sadly it didn't. I had hoped for a celebration of singledom but sadly i found it more a litany of regret for lost love unborn children with the finger firmly pointed at her parents loathsome marriage for her own failure to sustain a relationship.
I suppose I had hoped for a witty celebration of girls nights out - the joy of sole ownership of the remote control etc.

Unfortunately not

If you want to be depressed by these bitter ramblings, be my guest. This book gives happily single women a bad name. There I was thinking I'd found a like-minded spirit and found the same drivel dished out by most of the Bridget Jones-esque set - except this one served cold. There is more to life than being jealous of your mother, condescending to your friends (and readers) and projecting an aloof superiority. The title of this book is a con - don't be fooled into buying it.

4 out of 5 stars intelligent entertainment   February 18, 2006

The word 'Marriage' in the title is a big give away, yes this book is examining, in the most entertaining way, the feelings of unwed forty somethings on the whole issue of marriage and kids. But the emphasis is on entertainment with some wonderful moments that will draw laughs or groans of recognition. And if you're not forty something and single you'll still have a ball with this. Carol Clewlow books are too rare a treat and as a fan of previous novels I was delighted to find this one. If you too enjoyed 'A woman's guide to Adultery' or 'Love in the Modern Sense' then you will also love this, although structurally its not as tight, more anecdotal and self consciously witty. However that's not intended as a critcism, this book entertains in a different way and shows the author trying a slightly different voice than she has in previous work. Still great fun...feel good fun...intelligent, feel good fun...how often do you get that from a novel?
