It's OK but only OK... September 23, 2008 This is the first time I've read a Cathy Kelly book, and judging by the comments of other reviewers, it's not one of her best. It's perfectly well written, but I couldn't empathise with any of the characters, and because of that I didn't really care what happened. There was nothing to keep the reader hooked, no build up of tension, and some of the descriptions of people were quite contradictory so you can't get a clear picture of what's going on in your mind's eye. It's one of those where I had to force myself to keep going. It's not bad, but not one I'd recommend.
Not one of her best July 18, 2008 I love Cathy Kelly but this had a weak storyline and was very dull and boring. Definitely her worst book to date. I read a lot on the train to work but struggled to get through this and kept losing my concentration. It was not a page-turner like a lot of her other books. very disappointed!
Fantastic Chic-lit! April 8, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is my first Cathy Kelly novel and I can't wait to buy another. I could not wait to read it every day and went to bed early just so I could read my book in peace. I sat reading in bed 'til 1am as I was on the last 3 chapters and had to know what happened.
I thought the characters were described beautifully as I could visualise them perfectly. The ending was done brilliantly as I have never read a novel where the death was set so beautifully giving the detail of what the grandmothers sees in heaven. Can't believe anyone would find this book boring-it's great especially wiht thhe chapters relating to when the grandmother was a young woman.
Disappointing read! March 27, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am an avid fan of all of Cathy Kelly's books but this one was not up to her usual standard. Bought the paperback at the airport (glad I did not waste money on the hardback) such a dull and boring read. Come on Cathy, you can do better. Would not recommend.
Yawn Yawn March 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Since reading Woman to Woman in the 90's, I have been a fan of Cathy Kelly novels, eagerly awaiting each new one to be published. This one however, and I'm sorry to say this, is boring, boring, boring. I had to force myself to pick it up and continue each chapter. The central characters have no substance, the general storyline is very repetitive, and you get the feeling that you've read it all many times before in other books, only better. I am still only three quarters of the book in and dying to get it finished, just so's I can move on to something else. I am sorry I wasted my birthday book token buying the hardback copy. If you must read it, only to see for yourself, then borrow it from the library. Don't waste your money.
