2 out of 5 stars A Dissapointment.   July 31, 2008

I cannot but feel let down after reading this book. After the first Jack Steel novel, yes there were obvious reasons why it should be compared to the Sharpe adventures, but has a good yarn I felt it had good merit, and stood up very well on its own. This second novel lacked pace ( except towards the end )and certainly was nowhere has good a read has the first.
Lets hope Mr Gale third one regains the momentum.

5 out of 5 stars It is a vast improvement from the first book... good old swashbuckling!   April 15, 2008

As action&war novels are concerned (specially British pulp) you could of course take your pick... and this is one of the most recent sagas.
I have always found a GOOD historical background helps a lot, and that Mr. Gale provides, but also (and a thing which sometimes is sadly forgotten by his fellow writers...) it MUST HAVE A THRILLING PLOT... and for once from the middle of the book onwards this happens to my satisfaction... the first part of the book is not bad but trodes upon the same ground as the first book of the series... but once you start thinking "it would be more of the same..." the action evolves to a fast paced swashbuckling plot full of "baddies" (at their nastiest) and without telling you too much (I do not like spoilers myself) it makes for a cracking read.
Much better then the first book, I decided on the spot to buy the third (or pre-order as it is know to you and me...) as soon as possible... for once I am even interested in the romantic plot started here and to see what happens next.
It has been justly (perhaps a bit) criticized as too similar in approach to the well known SHARPE&HARPER Cornwell's characters... STEEL&SLAUGHTER (who did propose that name for the sergeant!...) but I think you could just say the same about any other "paper military fiction heroes" around as FONTHILL&352 and a long etc.
I enjoyed for what it is good old escapism reading. Probably not the peak of English LITERATURE... but I already know my classics... and I know when I need a bit of fun...

RECOMMENDED (for what it is... and what you expect if you are reading this review)
