Another winner from Rachel Allen November 9, 2008 This girl knows her baking! If cakes, breads and pastry are normally a struggle then look no further. Rachel Allen shows you how to get top results and best of all she makes it easy.Recipes That Really Work
Pretty Good Cook Book November 7, 2008 As a fairly amateur but keen cook, I wholeheratedly agree with all the other reviewers. This is a good little cook book. I also would have preferred each recipe to have a photo so I know what it looks like and whether I have cooked it right! I am not keen on the typefont either, but having said that, there are great tips (as in her accompanying series) and I do love the end section on jams, sauces etc. One that I will be using quite a bit.
Highly reliable and oh so enjoyable recipes November 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having watched some of the 'Bake' series on UK food, I was inspired to buy this accompanying cookbook.
And very pleased I am too, as the book far exceeds my expectations.
Rachel writes in an easy to follow, non-patronising way, giving clear and reliable instructions. The recipes are accurate, giving good results. Rachel also offers top tips (try rolling pastry in cling film - genius!)and ways to vary things to suit you.
The illustrations are mouthwatering, and so far all my versions look pretty similar! (Current top favourites are the Fresh cream sponge roll, and the pretty swirled meringues).
It has inspired me to bake, lots lots more, and to great success and appreciation of friends and family.
I cant recommend 'Bake' enough, for amateur and expreienced cooks alike.
P.S. I believe the series is being broadcast on the BBC soon - I recommend watching that too if you can, simply brilliant.
A Future Classic from Rachel Allen. November 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I've enjoyed using recipes from Rachel's other cookbooks, like another reviewer, I believe (even after trying only a few of the recipes so far) that this one will become one of my indispensable reference cookbooks. All the recipes I've tried so far work gloriously and I'm looking forward to trying the christmas cake (an interesting twist on a classic by her mother in-law, Darina Allen).Ballymaloe Cookery Course.
Well done Rachel! October 29, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
A wonderful selection of cakes and bakes. I probably have a lot of the recipes already here and there as most of them are classics but the fact that they are gathered (with clever variations suggested to boot!) in this lovely book will be quite useful. The recipes I have tried are very good indeed and I don't think there is much room for failure as everything is explained very clearly. I have got the feeling that this together with Good Food 101 Bakes and Cakes will be the reference books I turn to when I want to bake a great cake but don't have the time or don't feel like browsing through my other books. Well done Rachel!
