One read only, I think August 20, 2008 'The Two Princesses of Bamarre' certainly did have its highlights, but I finished the book feeling a little unsatisfied. It didn't really have the enthusiasm or charm of 'Ella Enchanted', and I felt like the author doesn't really have the technical skill to compete with the many other fairy tale/fantasy books out there.
The characters are generally flat and bland, and don't really seem to have much life in them. Addie, the heroine, was a bit of a drip, and her love interest had no character, no personality and nothing at all to make him interesting or memorable. The 'other' princess tried her hardest to liven things up, but she wasn't really up to it, either.
The plot was fairly pacy, but it didn't draw me in, or transport me to a different world. And the writing style, while easy to read, was clean and precise like a Primary School kid. I didn't feel drawn into the character's problems or emotions, and she didn't use many interesting descriptions, so, on the whole, I felt that the book lacked atmosphere.
The book's main strength lies in the author's inventive use of magic. She cunningly weaves together old and new ideas to create amazing magical objects like tables that supply food on command, and places.
The plot is fairly standard fairy tale, but the author does add a nice twist at the end, to prevent it from becoming too cliched and predictable.
Gail Carson Levine is GREAT!!! October 20, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Timid princess Addie turns over a new leaf when her sister catches Grey Death and changes from happy and healthy to life-threatingly ill. This lovely story should definitly perk up readers 8 and above.
The best book I've ever read! A memberable one for sure. April 18, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This tale by Mrs. Levine ensures a pleasurable adventure with unlikely heroes and is filled with exciting adventures, yet it has a charming love story entertwined. This should definatly be at the top of your "need to read list."
Tale of bravery and honour July 12, 2004 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Step follows step, hope follows courage ... The Two Princesses of Bamarre is an unusual tale of bravery and honour. The transformation and self discovery of Addie and the twist in the ending really left a mark in my heart.Very encouraging story and may the tale of The Two Princesses live for ever.
Gail Carson Levine is the best author ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! August 1, 2003 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Addie and Meryl have always been the closest of sisters, and used to do plays in which Addie would get the grey death and Meryl would go find the cure. But when Meryl gets the disese, it is scardy-cat Addie who has to go find the cure. But can she defeat her fears?A tale showing just have far you would go to save the ones you love. Showing that inside us is a power like no other. This book has every thing you need for a perfect book - love, magic, an unlikely hero, and (ofcourse) dragons! One of my favourite authors and an inspiring book, tellind us to just believe in ourselves and then we can acieve anything. READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
