ALL ABOUT MARY. May 11, 2008 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
Well after reading this book i can honestly say i know everything about Mary Shomon`s health, her eating habits, her likes and dislikes, her beliefs and her non-beliefs, who she would trust and who she thinks is full of...bull, every single ailment she`s ever had, and how much she weighed at various stages of her life - and even more personal things that i won`t go into. She gives good sound advice on how to find a caring GP who will discuss everything with you in the minutest detail, and is willing to listen to ALL of your symptoms - not just a few - and then he should call you and ask you to come back as he now knows what is wrong with you - that`s if he`s worth his salt of course. She tells you how to get the advice you need from your GP if he is unwilling to give it - ways to make him talk and tell all. How to make sure he does every possible test available, and explain it all to you as you go along. Apparently, you stand your ground, tell him you want to know everything, you will not be fobbed off, and refuse to leave until he tells you - tell him you`ve read mary`s book and you`re having none of this - you know your rights ! - and keep going back to make your point known. Then, after you`ve been arrested, been given bail - if you`re lucky - and got back home, you start looking for a new GP and go through the whole process again - and again - and on and on like that - and if you weren`t ill when you started all this, well you certainly are now - along with the majority of GP`s and receptionists in your area. What all this has to do with Hypothyroidism is beyond me, but i suppose it wouldn`t leave you much time to worry about your condition would it..? So....yeh - that`s about it really. Poor old Mary - i do hope she`s better - but i still haven`t got a clue what`s up with me.
A useful book December 26, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Shomon's book comes across as well researched and she covers many areas to a good level of detail. Rather than reading it cover to cover, I find it a useful reference point where I can go to understand the basic facts. As my diagnosis has progressed, I have found myself returning time and time again to this book, just because it explains, well, what my doctor doesn't have time to explain. While it's very much focused on the US which can be frustrating, I still find this book very useful.
highly informative for UK hypothyroidism too September 25, 2006 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Although it is written from an american perspective this book is still highly useful for anyone with hypothyroidism, wherever they are in the world & I have not come across a more useful book. Although some of her information is opinion and not evidence, she does collect an enormous breath of evidence about managing your own hypothyroid symptoms. This is a condition often down played by british GP's, and with Mary's advice I discovered one reason I could not conceive was because my thryroid was being undertreated by my own GP. I have since checked with our local fertility treatment centre & discovered Mary was right & my GP not up to date with current best practice for treating hypothyroidism. With correct treatment & Mary's tips, I now feel like a new person. I definitely recommend anyone with an underactive thyroid should buy this book, & although I agree with the reveiwer below it can be a little repetitive at times, it is all good stuff.
Mostly written for the American Market March 27, 2002 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book has so many references to the American world that it's not really that effective here in Scotland. I also think that the Author repeats herself quite a bit. I actually had to put the book down and started reading another that I had bought. I did go back and finish it and it does have some useful hints there, but even they are geared to the American Market. I am glad however that I read this book as it gave me some insight to thyroid problems.
