5 out of 5 stars Top quality common sense information – an excellent read   March 22, 2006

This is the 1st of John Vigor's books I have read, and it won't be the last. What sets him apart from many other excellent authors, is his simple style which gently and logically leads the reader through virtually all you need to give thought to, prior to proceeding offshore.

John explains his subjects with the greatest of care. His explanation of Seasickness (and remedies) is the best I've read. Similarly, the section on how to manage the sails of your yacht in heavy weather, and the effect of each decision is frankly, as comprehensive an explanation as you'll find in a book 3 times the size.

Be prepared to have a pencil to hand when reading this book, because there will be so many phrases and suggestions you'll know you'll want to come back to.

I'm preparing to go offshore, and John's advice deepens one's understanding of what is required (and what is not!) hugely.

Thank you John, for sharing your experience so well!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for any sailor going offshore   January 3, 2001

I enjoyed this book immensely. It contained a lot of common sense and is well worth a read by everyone who sails offshore or is going to sail offshore. The underlying theme is to help you prepare your boat for any event at sea. I particularly liked the "black box" idea!
