Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
You are travelling around Europe but want to steer clear of the multinational hotel chains. If you are after quirky accommodation and you value the opinions of real travellers, not just professional reviewers, then The Good Hotel Guide 2000 Continental Europe is an excellent starting place for your search.

Value for money, child-friendliness, location, hospitality and whether pets are accepted are just some of the criteria considered in each hotel review. The guide includes hotels in 17 continental countries. Phone, fax, e-mail and website details are listed where applicable along with facilities, opening times and the cost of rooms at the time of printing. At the back of the book there are basic black and white maps. If you are travelling to one of the hotels listed you'd by advised to take with you a more detailed colour map. The guide contains opinions sent in by devotees which make for informative and fun reading. Take a review of a hotel in Aigues-Mortes in France: "Aigues-Mortes is a living, active town with enough bloodthirsty history to keep the children interested. My seven-year-old liked the places for tipping boiling oil on to attackers".

As with its sister publication, The Good Pub Guide 2000, the continental Europe hotel guide is independent and no freebies change hands for a hotel to appear in it. However, for those who are tempted by the hotels listed the book includes discounted vouchers for 25 per cent off the B&B price at selected hotels. Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, if you are tired of corporate uniformity, pack this guide in your suitcase. --Anna Hornsey

4 out of 5 stars A Good Investment   January 21, 2003

It is timely that the new edition of the Good Hotel Guide for Continental Europe comes out in the middle of January. This is a difficult, dark month for most people living in Great Britain so naturally we turn our thoughts to sunnier climes. The guide is the perfect aide for planning those patches of blue sky escapes so vital to our health and well being.
It is the most comprehensive and possibly most honest guide of it's genre and I wouldn't be without it. It has not let me down and is definitely the guide to choose for the discerning traveller who seeks escape from the corporate identity. The editors select only those establishments that will offer a personal service to their clients and who are genuinely interested in people. Consequently, on arrival at your chosen accommodation you are assured of a realxed ambience instead of the hectic fraught one often found in large establishments.
Each hotel has to meet with rigourous standards, for comfort, location, food, atmosphere etc. These are then constantly monitored and reviewed before being selected for the next edition. The editors are not shy of dropping any where there is, for example a new manager or owner or where standards alter over the course of 12 months. Consequently this enables the reader to make an informed decision thus perhaps avoiding costly mistakes.
Budgets of all types are catered for and most reviews will give you the essence of the hotel featured mentioning it's strengths and weaknesses. It is important to bear in mind that this guide unlike many other well known guides does not accept payment from proprietors so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.
It also makes very good reading so I encourage you to make that investment as soon as possible !

5 out of 5 stars one of the best guides   September 27, 2000
The good Hotel Guide is one of the best guides you can buy. There are no paid entries or advertising, the guide relies on guest's comments, which enables you to get information about a place you will never get from a commercial guide.
