Amazon.co.uk Review The word 'metamorphosis' is described in the Oxford Concise Dictionary as meaning: a change of form, (by natural or supernatural means) a change of character, conditions etc. How perfectly this word describes the state of a woman beginning -- or going through -- the trauma of the menopause! Is it me or is it hot in here? by Jenni Murray, should be compulsory reading. Not just for women needing help and advice on the complexities of the menopause, but also for men trying to understand why women are so complex at this time. Marcelle Smith, a Magazine Editor, once observed: " Women are like eggs, they hatch in their forties." Jenni Murray feels that her book is about, "a search for a better understanding of what is happening to us physically, what we can do about it and how we learn to make informed decisions about the best way to act as regards the medical profession, friends, children and partners." Primarily though, she hopes that through sharing our experiences of what we suffer or not, as the case may be, we find some comfort in the fact that we are not alone, that there are various strategies for making ourselves feel better and that these feelings will not go on for ever. Jenni's book covers everything in some depth including: what is the menopause? the pros and cons of HRT, alternatives to HRT, diet and exercise, "old age aint for cissies" some further reading and ends with some useful addresses. It is a marvellous book and very helpful. On a more personal level, my only complaint is that this book wasn't written earlier. Such a lot of pain and heartache could have been avoided and more questions answered. Oh well, better late than never I suppose!--Lynne Unwin.

Disappointed! October 13, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of Jenni Murray and bought this book hoping for some insight into my own approaching menopause. I found it negative and alarmist. For Murray the menopause seems to have hit like a tidal wave, bringing overwhelming feelings of misery and dispair. She occasionally gives a nod to the fact that some people she spoke to did not - astonishingly - experience a raft of hideous symptoms during this phase of their lives. If you approach this unknown territory with the mild anxiety that I did, beware; this book will not calm your fears.
My female GP recommended ths book to me, and I have bought it for 3 friends so far. February 9, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Simply a really helpful book. It is reader friendly, often amusing and always explains clearly any technical, chemical or gobbelldegook that you may have been told before. Through this book (which was recommended by my marvelous female GP)I have found the right help to get me through this part of my life. It was also interesting to hear how well known women have got through the menopause.

Extremely helpful and informative March 11, 2002 43 out of 47 found this review helpful
I actually bought this book and had it sent to my mother.Afterwards I wondered if I had done the right thing as she is 65 and surely pretty much past all this menopause thing, but apparently not!She thoroughly enjoyed it,could relate to it really well, found it all extremely helpful, the info re HRT,the exercises and the alternative herbal remedies. Many women of her age have problems with HRT and are forced to stop and then apparently the menopausal symptoms return. Since my mother is currently not on line I thought I'd write this on her behalf and recommend this book to all women in their mid-forties and up to read.Certainly well worth buying.
Every woman should read this... March 9, 2001 88 out of 89 found this review helpful
The prospect of the menopause is daunting enough for most women, never mind the actual experience of it. It's probably the last taboo, the subject that, even among friends, we are loath to talk about because it draws a line across our lives in a way that nothing else does. Most of the books on the subject so far have been written with a preset agenda, but at last, Jenni Murray has provided us with an overview that gives enough information for us to figure out what might be the best option for us as individuals. At least it gives us the ammunition to make informed demands of our doctors, as well as an understanding of what's happening to our bodies and our emotions. And as you'd expect from the flagship presenter of Woman's Hour, it comes in an accessible package that never seeks to blind us with science in the cause of making the author seem like God. As someone who suspects she's definitely perimenopausal and probably heading into the full eye of the storm sometime soon, I found this a heartening read. Every woman should read this at least once (given how menopause affects the memory!) and then pass it on to their partners!
