Good advice, but I just didn't like it much May 31, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
There is alot of good common-sense advice in this book, and it can only benefit to read as much as possible about persuing an artistic career. But I didn't find this book as inspirational as I'd hoped. I got about a third of the way through, and realised I was making myself read it because I thought it would be useful. So I stopped, because basically, I was bored. To me, this book just feels like lost of self-helpy, slightly obvious advice about following your dreams. There is practical advice, but so far it's stuff like 'Don't get in debt'. I think maybe this would be a very useful book to some people, but I'm just not clicking with it. The writer has a background in journalism, and to be honest I think the punchy, short-sentence, 'just-do-it' style would work better in short articles. As a 188-page book, it's getting tedious.
Personally I like a bit more quirk in my self-help books. Maybe I didn't like this book because I've just read 'The Lost Soul Companion', which is a similar book in theme, but completely different in style, and to me a far more likeable book. I finished it in a couple of days - it was addictive. But with 'Anything I Can Do..', I felt like I was kind of being lectured at in a loud voice, from someone who felt she had all the answers. It was too upbeat. But maybe Im just a downbeat person.
Okay, I would just also like to point out how suspicious it is that, apart from me, EVERY SINGLE reviewer has given this book 5*. Plus, if you click on 'See all my reviews' next to their name, you'll find that most of them seem to have only reviewed this book.
Read this book and ditch your 9 to 5 job forever August 31, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a gem and a one off. It's a wonderfully entertaining and moving read about how you can make a living out of doing something that matters to you. If you are sick of the 9 to 5 job but don't know how to get out of it or are too scared to do so then read this guide. Each chapter is really inspiring because it's about real people just like you and me. When you read how they confronted their fears and the barriers in front of them you will see how you could do it too. That's one of the real surprises of this book. It's actually very practical in telling you how to do it. I like that. Anyone can tell you to pursue your dreams; it's much harder to show you how to do it.
My favourite book of 2006! When is the follow up?
Life changing book June 26, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As someone who tends to come away from self-help books feeling more depressed than before, I am amazed how inspirational Souter's book reads. It's not just a book I could finally relate to but also a brilliant step-by-step guide to overcoming fear, feelings of inadequacy and the paralysing worry of failure. I've started living the life I want and hope this book will inspire you to do the same!
Take the challenge! August 10, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Tessa Souter's inversion of the playground taunt "anything you can do I can do better" transforms competitiveness into encouragement to take the challenge to pursue your dreams. A refreshing and frank mix of memoir, advice and inspiration, this book shows that you can realize your creative ambitions. Navigating a creative journey can be lonely and frustrating, and Souter's book offers companionship and guidance to get you over hurdles and fears. Written in a conversational tone with lots of brilliant wit, "Anything I Can Do ..." is like having a mentor at your beck and call. There's no preaching or bragging here; just the honest benefits of Souter's experience and that of the many people she interviewed for the book. I recommend purchasing her CD and seeing her perform as well. Experiencing Souter's musical talent is equally inspiring as reading her book.
Get On With Your Journey. June 26, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Every word of "Anything I Can Do...You Can Do Better" expresses so honestly what many of us experience every waking moment in our professions - dread, doubt, depression, betrayal, fiduciary uncertainty - it's all true and it's all here. Truly, we need to hear this kind of advice (again) as we continually drive our fists into our thigh saying aloud "What the hell am I doing this for?" All Tessa is doing is standing behind us, giving us a pat on the bum and telling us to "get on with it!" She's right. What else are we supposed to do?
This is one of those books that should be put into the hands of every first year music/art/journalism/etc. student. They'll need something to lift their mood after a spirit-crushing session with some of their bitter and burned-out instructors (I talk from experience, believe me.) Those of us in the trenches need it after a day of battle with our colleagues/enemies (depends on if there's a full moon.) What I loved most about "Anything I Can Do...You Can Do Better" is its realistic perception of and message about success - or as Dorothy Colgan put it "That joy is in the journeying, not at the journey's end."
Brilliant!
