Its Karn-evil October 17, 2008 I discovered Craig a few years ago when a supermarket had his first novel on offer I was immediately drawn into the world of Jan Fabel who was facing not only a bizarre crime but was looking to solve it through modern Police methods. So when the forth book landed I really couldn't wait to get my hands on it.
This latest epic takes Jan out of Hamburg and onto Cologne allowing the reader to explore a new German city and experience the madness that is Carneval. It's a fascinating story with a large number of twists and characters that you just keep guessing as to who the villain is, throughout the story awaiting for the unveil at the books end. Throw into the mix a touch of character vengeance and you've got a tale that really has been waiting to explode from the first page.
BRILLIANT!!! September 29, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Another cracking! read from author Craig Russell, featuring Chief Commissarr Jan Fabel, set mainly in Cologne during the annual Cologne Carnival. Fabel has been asked to assist the Chief of Cologne Police, Bennie Stoltz, in his efforts to catch a serial killer, responsible for killing women during the three previous years, Cologne Carnivals, although Fabel has agreed to do this, he has another reason for going to Cologne,Maria Klee one of his staff has gone missing whilst on sick leave, Fabel believes she has gone to Cologne in search of sadistic killer and Ukraine crime boss Victor Vitrenko.
A rivetting read, full of complex twist and turns, a real page turner, you wont want to put down.
Stoltz is an engaging and hilarious character who i hope Mr. Russell will feature again (PLEASE) in future books.
Read and enjoy!!
complex and thought-provoking August 28, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
If you've read any of this series before you'll know to expect a highly literate,well-researched and complex setting and characters. Add to this a helter-skelter, fast paced and alarming narrative and a deeply unsettling situation and you have a book that's truly hard to put down. Some of the phrases and ideas will stay with you long after you'll closed it for the final time. Fabel was at his most believable and likeable yet. Maria Klee too was another fully realised and credible character even in the extremities to which she is driven. A really super book, the best yet from Craig Russell.
The Carnival Master - Craig Russell August 26, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you haven't discovered Craig Russell's Jan Fabel - then you are definitely missing out on a fantastic crime series. This is the fourth in the series. Sometimes novels within series lose their momentum. Not so in the Fabel series with once again a cleverly crafted plot with twists that are unexpected. Normally set in Hamburg, in the Carnival Master, Fabel travels to Cologne to prevent a killer from attacking women during the annual carnival celebrations. Unbeknown to Fabel, Maria Klee, one of his officers on sick leave has travelled to Cologne to exact justice on a terrifying Ukranian killer, Vasyl Vitrenko, who featured in the first of the series. Additionally, a Ukranian special forces team is hunting Vitrenko with the aim of assassination. Russell depicts Hamburg and Cologne convincingly and realistically (believe me due to these novels I have been!). You also get information on German way of life and traditions that never get in the way of the plot. The setting of the Carnival is clever - people dressing up, not being who they really are, and letting their hair down in organised chaos. I can't say any more or it will spoil it. Fabel is a well drawn character - he is agonising over whether to remain a police officer or not and whether to live with his partner or not. He says one thing to others clearly not meaning it - this lends him believable human traits. There are some grisly parts but this is once again a gripping, clever and intelligently written crime novel.
Excellent and unputtdownable August 16, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Top marks again to Craig Russell for a truly superb thriller. There are three threads running through the story with the background of carnival time in Cologne. The dialogue is witty, the descriptions of places spot-on, and is as expected, gruesome in parts. He is definitely one of the best writers of late.
