Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Readers familiar with the epic sweep of Louis de Bernieres' previous novels, and especially his phenomenally successful Captain Corelli's Mandolin, might be shocked by this small volume of (literally) shaggy dog stories. But those who have enjoyed the humour of those same novels will appreciate this sleeker, slimline de Bernieres.

In 1998, de Bernieres visited the mining towns of Western Australia and stumbled across a bronze statue of Red Dog (1971-1979) outside Dampier. Inspired by this legendary canine, he made another visit, collecting the stories of his life and gently fictionalising them. We follow Red Dog, the itinerant, resourceful, if flatulent hero ("a real dag of a dog") as he seduces all who meet him at Hamersley Iron Transport. After his early residence with New Zealander John is cut short by John's untimely death, however, Red Dog undertakes "his greatest adventures" with "absolute liberty", criss-crossing the country with amazing ease, becoming the "Pilbara Wanderer, the Dog of the North-West, who belonged to everyone because he couldn't find the one he loved the most, and wouldn't settle for less".

Whether undermining the Hitlerian trailer-park managers, or hitch-hiking from Perth, Red Dog always comes up trumps. Dealing with his hero's inevitable decline, de Bernieres manages to secure real empathy for the dog, without declining into mawkishness--perhaps because we all know a Red Dog, canine or otherwise. As one character points out: "Everyone's got a Red Dog story. Someone ought to write them down." Louis de Bernieres thankfully has. --Alan Stewart

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate, funny, quirky and sweet - not just for dog lovers   June 23, 2008
When I saw Louis de Bernieres at a reading recently, he discussed Red Dog and mentioned that it was meant to be a children's book, but his publishers failed to advertise as such. In my opinion, I'm glad this error was made, as many adult readers may have been less likely to try this book if they had thought it was meant for children.

Red Dog is a beautiful novella, based on the true story of a dog that travelled around Australia in the 70s, befriending everyone he met. It describes how the love for such a character can bring people together, and make them work together in times of loss and despair. The overall message is truly uplifting.

I feel I should also note that whether or not you like dogs should have no bearing on whether you choose to read this book. It is compassionate, funny, quirky and sweet, and a great way to pass a couple of hours.

5 out of 5 stars Like the author, I hope that my cat doesn't find out about this book!   January 12, 2008
I got this book thinking that it was going to be the story of someone's family pet but instead got the story of a dog who befriended everyone, even his feline counterpart, Red Cat. (Yes, there was a Red Cat as well!) I enjoyed all of this book but bits that stand out were the barbecue where Red Dog (or Tally Ho as he then was) indirectly caused a fight after the barbecue goers blamed each other for missing sausages (guess who ate them??), the time he turned up at a dog show, as well as the part where a vet learned that the red-coated dogs he had treated were one and the same dog. There were times that people were cruel to Red Dog as well as kind, reminding us that dogs have feelings as much as humans.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   October 7, 2007

This is a lovely heart-warming book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and would definitely recommend to others, especially dog lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Could do better   February 27, 2007
RED DOG by Louis de Bernieres

Most people will enjoy the book about a dog that became both famous and infamous in Western Australia during the early 70's. It is based on a real dog that has a statue in a town called Dampier, and the journeys that this dog got on. The author could have gone into a bit more depth in some of the chapters and expanded on what was happening. I found this book enjoying but to short. It seamed to me to be aimed at the early to mid teenage reader but some adults will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars RED DOG IS ACE   February 27, 2007
Red dog is a wonderfully written book by Louis De Bernieres which will make you laugh and at some points make you feel upset.
Most of the scenes are set in the Australian outback and De Bernieres use of imagery is superb. once engrossed in the pages you are whisked off to Karratha Western Australia a small mining town with dusty roads, dark red earth and rock and one smelly red dog.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Australia and animals the language is simple but sometimes you may become confused by some of the Australian words or literacy but fear not there is a glossary of Australianisms to keep you up to date and before you know it you be talking with your Sheila about going bush and having a stubbie.
