Interesting but not easy to read. March 30, 2008 The subject matter is fasinating but the style and especially the grammar are terrible. I know that sounds nerdy, however, it put me off an otherwise interesting book.
Impressive July 23, 2007 I think what strikes you as you read this book is just how many preconceptions you have about what kind of person would be a profiler in the FBI BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES UNIT. I can tell you in the first 20 pages these presumptions are turned on their head! As this book is largely biographical you get a real sense of the man behind the profiling. In that sense it is intensely personal and honest. What you see is a regular guy with a unique gift, and a great style of writing. It reads like a hollywood movie and I don't just mean silence of the lambs! You really do get caught up and enveloped with John Douglas' career through the FBI from his days as a college dropout, to club bouncer, to Air Force golf pro! I was apprehensive that this book might be a little over-technical or wooden. But I was not disappointed. As said below, a must for anyone who aspires to understand the darker side of humanity!
The secrets of criminal profiling explained by John Douglas December 28, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
`Mind Hunter' comprises the thirty-year career of the eminent FBI profiler and Behavioural Science lecturer, John Douglas, including his boyhood dreams of becoming a veterinarian , the college years that he spent in the state of Montana, and his decision to become part of Law Enforcement by joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In `Mind Hunter', the federal agent illustrates the most significant interviews that he had with offenders who committed heinous crimes that made an entire country shake in fear and horror. Furthermore, Douglas explains how he was able to use his interviews with such gruesome offenders to hone skills that would later allow him to become the forefather of Criminal Profiling: after John Douglas had interviewed so many offenders, he learnt how to put himself in the very mind of the killer, follow his steps, and watch through his eyes; what is more, his countless interviews at penitentiaries are described with a surgeon's precision; the author is extremely meticulous in conveying the impressions that he felt as he interrogated offenders and learnt about the atrocities they perpetrated.
I have enormously enjoyed reading this book. Although John Douglas is not a novelist per se, his writing is simply brilliant and does not pale in comparison to illustrious authors . Reading the accounts contained in this superlative work makes it impossible for anyone to put down the book once he or she has started reading it. I would recommend it to avid readers of novels but also to readers that are appreciative of criminal profiling; a subject that I have recently become familiar with, and that I have progressively been drawn into by reading `Mind Hunter'.
Brillant read, unable to put down. January 22, 2002 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is one of the best books that looks into the minds of the sick people that committ these murders. The author john douglas is an ex-FBI agent and is very detailed in the descriptions of the murders and crime scenes. Highly recommend to anyone who is into crime and crime fighting.
Absolutely Chilling ! November 28, 2001 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
I'm not easily scared, but this book really made cold shivers run down my spine. The reason for that is that the subject matter of "Mindhunter" is not the fantasy of an author's creation, but is true facts about real people. We watch horror movies and think, "Nobody could be like that", and feel safe in our knowledge that when the film is over, the horror goes away. Read "Mindhunter" and realise that there are people like that. The things they do make your skin crawl and it is not a story. Neither does it go away ! Not, at least, until they are caught and "Mindhunter" is an account of how forensic psychology does just that. Riveting stuff !
