Easy entertainment November 13, 2008 This was slightly different from the usual puerile mummy lit touted about. Whilst being scatty yet endearing, Lucy was also very real and I liked the book for its comic yet grown up observations of motherhood. There were flaws and aspects that were very unrealistic - the celebrity dad character for one...no mention of the paparazzi, this man wandered about in situations that I just couldn't believe or visualise. On the whole however, it was entertaining and a candid insight into the world of a less than perfect (you may even say normal) mum. The stereotypes were uncannily accurate and I'll certainly observe the playground for some real life examples in future!! One thing though, it was a shame Neill 'dumbed' Lucy down so much - surely no-one can be that relentlessly disorganised?!
I loved it! October 29, 2008 I identified totally with the "Slummy Mummy." Excellent chick lit. It was recommended by Tony Horne in the Morning on Metro Radio.
So much more August 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I laugh when I read the columns in The Times, I preferred the novel by some distance. A better opportunity to see the characters in more depth, without the restraint of 500 words a week. The book is hugely enjoyable. Though there has already been much said about how hilarious it is - and it is! - there is more to it. Unlike many of the other 'chick lit' genre into which this is often put, there is no showing off in this book; it is carefully crafted - not thrown together - and beautifully plotted. Although at times uproarious, it handles the vicissitudes of hurtling towards middle age in a gentle and humane way. I loved it!
Could be anyone I know! August 23, 2008 I found the book a little slow at first, but once I got into it I really enjoyed it. The main character could have been any number of mothers I know! She has a young family and so has a dirty car, a fridge full of out-of-date food, and a disorganised day. She's forgetful yet likeable. I would recommend this book to those who can identity with a mother who knows that there are not enough hours in the day!
Where are the real heroines? August 18, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I began reading this book with an open mind - I read all sorts of fiction and whereas I wouldn't have picked this out myself (it was nominated at my book club) I thought it might be a fairly amusing summer read. However, as the characters are revealed and the plot develops, Neil presents you with a portfolio of stereotyped, unappealing characters getting up to nothing of any real significance. I'm tired of reading about North Londoners working in 'The Media' and women who constantly worry about their weight yet portray thin women as uptight neurotics. It would be inspiring one day to read about a woman aged over 30, who's healthy, focussed, and successful ...a real heroine.
