1 out of 5 stars Not value for money   November 15, 2008
As a Karin Slaughter fan, I was ready to buy this when it was released. After seeing how many pages it was I didn't. In the end someone bought it for me as a gift. It's a fairly interesting short story although it's easy to work out it's all about Martin's mother. This isn't up to the standard you expect from Karin Slaughter. It isn't a crime thriller and the characters within the book are very stereotyped - I feel this also lets it down quite a bit. It isn't a funny book, but then it can't be serious either. It just leaves you wondering why you're reading it really.

2 out of 5 stars Short changed   October 27, 2008
This 147 page book (17 of those are blank or nearly so) is little more than a short story. And hence it would be poor value for money even if it were up to Ms Slaughter's usual excellent standard.

Unfortunately, like Patricia Cornwell's Southern Cross / Hornet's Nest series, she should eschew humour and stick to the straight murder and small-town evil she does so well. Maybe the American sense of humour just falls flat this side of the pond, but apart from a few smiles in the first chapter I found it just wasn't funny. The characters are too grotesque to be even slightly believable.

1 out of 5 stars dont bother   October 23, 2008
dont even bother, i automatically ordered this from amazon as i have done all other books, had i seen it in the shop i wouldnt have bothered. just over 100 pages long and half an hour to read. what a rip off. i only gave it 1 star because i had to.Martin Misunderstood

2 out of 5 stars Not up to scratch!!   October 22, 2008
I was expecting more from this book as I have devoured everything else Karin Slaughter has written and cannot wait for the next adventure, however I felt this didn't have the usual spark, it was amusing and well written as always but was way too short, I got a shock when it finished, the relationships between the characters weren't developed and as others have stated, the book would have been great as part of a set of short stories. Roll on Grant County and tales of Sara and Lena!!!

2 out of 5 stars Good story but not value for money   October 19, 2008

OK, so where are the other short stories to make a book worth the list price. Ever had the feeling you've been duped by the publisher - you will if you buy this. This story would normally fit on 100 pages - they just drag it out with big typeset. What a pity as a book of short stories would have been good.
