5 out of 5 stars My Family and Other Animals   November 5, 2005

If you read this book, and if you don't find the characteristics of it characters, (both human and animal), then you don't go out much. No offence meant.
I found the book to be an extremely hilarious, and wonderful find. It is about Gerry Durrel, a young ten-year-old naturalist, who finds him and his family are on an escape to the island of Corfu, which he finds is zoological wonder of people and animals. He stays there for five years before they return back to England.
A tale of a wonderful childhood, somehow misplaced in a dysfunctional family.
During their stay in Corfu the family is forced to move three times, out of pestilences, and famines such as overrated friends, relatives, lack of bathrooms, and other beasts.
Meanwhile Gerry collect an assortment of animals such as: two rude magpies; a pigeon who thinks he is a human; two dogs who really live up to their names, Widdle and Puke; five, literally, royal goldfishes, (stolen), and many other creatures as well.
A rare and truly magical childhood.

Not many books have made me laugh out loud; this made me laugh out loud continually. You have to read about this family to believe it. Whether Gerry is buying ladybirds, adopting owls or studying scorpions, his observations on animals are fascinating, and the antics of his brothers and sister are amazing. A large part of the humour comes from the fact that the three elder siblings are all so completely different, and so completely self-absorbed! Larry, the eldest and the writer, 'may not be right but he is never wrong', which means that his lack of common sense is forever getting everyone else in trouble. Leslie, the next in line, is completely obsessed with guns and shooting things, a reminder that the Americans aren't the only "gun happy" nation. ;P Then there's Margot, the only girl, who pores over fashion magazines and rows out onto the open sea in Gerry's boat after her lover is sent away... You wonder how their mother survived.

Just buy this book and read it. You're guaranteed to cheer up immediately.

5 out of 5 stars A charming story - Genuinely funny   November 5, 2003

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The stories within each chapter are filled with animals, the wonderful eccentricities of Durrel's family and the other residents of Corfu. The island and the authors childhood sound wonderful and I would recommend this book to anyone seeking something light-hearted, interesting and amusing.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely charming and very easy to read   August 27, 2003

I read My Family And Other Animals whilst on holiday in Corfu and I couldn't have picked a better book to take with me. The story features a somewhat eccentric English family who move to Corfu because they're fed up with living in England. It tells of their experiences mainly from the eyes of the youngest family member, Gerry (Gerald Durrell).
I found this book absolutely charming and very easy to read. The siblings are unforgettable; bossy Larry with his love of literature, Leslie and his guns, Margo with her acne and of course Gerry with his animal collection.
There's a strong sense of freedom in the Durrell's new home and this makes for amusing reading throughout, especially when coupled with Mother's English reserve.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful read!   August 8, 2003

It took me a while to get into this book, but I am so pleased I stuck with it. The story is delightful, easy going and peppered with humour. It gives a insight into different cultures and wildlife. It's nice to read a book that's not full of sex and swearing. A must read for all ages. I loved it that much I feel enthused to read all Gerald Durrells other books.
