5 out of 5 stars Wonderful ! Total delight.   March 14, 2008
This is a really wonderful book. The language is rich and entertaining and the stories are excellent, magical. To start with my little girl (aged 7) found it quite scary - the pictures too - but after a while you realise that despite the horrific things which befall Erik and his splendidly named comarades on his quest to find the land where the sun goes at night - everything, at the end of every chapter, (each incredible adventure in its own right), is always alright. What's more the message of the tale is very charming. We have just finished the book and are both rather sad. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect bed time read   December 16, 2007
I bought this as a bed time read for my kids, and they utterly loved it, the chapters are not too long, and each chapter is a different adventure, perfect for a bed time read with your little ones.

The adventures are exciting but not too violent, it is written in an exciting and humourous style that you would expect from Terry Jones, my only disapointment was that there wasn't a sequal to it.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best children's book I've ever read   April 11, 2007
I rediscovered this gem only recently when hunting in my parent's loft and it brought back a flood of happy memories. When I ordered this book as a tyke through a school bookclub, aged just 6, I was unbelievably excited to receive it and I must have read it dozens of times. It's still just as good and has everything a child's book should - scary moments, heroic deeds, characters you care about, a wicked central baddie and some really terrifying creatures. I had the hardbook version of old, which featured tremendously atmospheric illustrations. I hope this version has maintained them, because they really add to the book.
If there is a criticism, it has to be that there's very little humour in the book, but I guess it's unashamedly one for the boys. When I've got tykes of my own, this will be essential bed-time reading for them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read for my 10 year old son   July 8, 2006
This book kept my 10 yr old son entertained from cover to cover.

He read it every night until it was finished over a period of weeks. Generally he reads a few chapters of a book and gets bored so this was a big sucess. Not only is this book great for reading to children it is also great for them to read to themselves.

Our copy is now very well thumbed and dog eared and the hard back cover is falling off - a sure sign that it has been loved.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Bedtime Reading   January 31, 2006

If you're a parent who likes to read to your children this is an ideal book. You can tell Jones has children of his own because he has written a book perfectly suited for reading aloud. The chapters are all quite short and each one is an individual tale within itself, which makes it an excellent book to read to your children at bedtime. It is also quite an entertaining book. My son loves history and is interested in Vikings so this book was a big hit with him.
