5 out of 5 stars The Great White Man-eating Shark   June 23, 2003

It's lovely to come across slightly off-the-wall titles for children, and this one is a must!
Norvin is a boy who likes acting and swimming, but unfortunately looks like a shark. With few prospects for sharkish actors, selfish Norvin turns his talents elsewhere, managing to keep everyone else out of the sea with his faultless impersonation of a Great White Man-Eating Shark.
His wicked ploy works a treat until a female Great White Man-Eating shark loses her heart to him....
Margaret Mahy's quirky story is elegantly balanced by Jonathan Allen's gloriously funny pictures (If you can't imagine what a ruthless shark-boy could possibly look like, you will have to go out and buy the book. Norvin is simply superb!)
This subtle and wittily illustrated book was read with great enjoyment by small children, and also greatly appreciated by ones as old as 11 and 12.
And speaking as an adult who has read it aloud on countless occasions,it certainly bears repetition. How many story books for small people can you say that about?
I thoroughly recommend it
