A brilliant story for everyone! December 29, 2006 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Brilliant! A great book for readers of any age. Older children, teens & adults should all enjoy it. I don't know how I missed this one out when I was younger, but it's definitely not just for kids... I loved it!! A smuggling tale of adventure that sees the main character, John Trenchard, mature from boy to man. A well-orchestrated twist to the end of the tale too. A classic!
You'll enjoy it. June 30, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Style - 4/5 Plot - 4/5 Readability - 4/5
I found the style quite reminiscent of R.L.Stevenson. This is a very moving and emotional story full of believable characters who you can sympathise with. There is a lot of action and adventure thrown in with just the right amount of romance, so suitable for both genders.
5 stars without a doubt February 15, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is probably my favourite book of all time (yes, yes I have read Harry Potter and as much as i like it, this is a much more superior class of storytelling). I have read and re-read my copy of Moonfleet so many times that it is now severely battered. I'm 18 and not really in the habit of reading old fashioned-type things, but trust me this is a really fab story. It's about a young lad called John Trenchard who lives in the village of Moonfleet. One day he accidentally discovers a vault/tomb by the local church. He finds himself in a smugglers' den and becomes mixed up in their dealings. There is also the legend of Blackbeard's diamond and a mysterious locket discovered in the dead man's coffin. John and his father-figure Elzivir are forced to leave the village and go on an amazing adventure which never lacks in excitement. There are smugglers, prisoners, theives, guns, treasure, capture, escape, death and even a bit of romance - everything you could ever want. I really love the writing style of this book too- it is over a hundred years old so some of the language is dated but I personally think that it added to the atmosphere of the story. Definitely do not be put off. I also like the fact that it is written in the first person as it makes you feel a lot closer to the main characters - especially near the end of the book. To sum up: it's an AMAZING book. So buy it!
Gripping, Accessible, Wonderful December 8, 2004 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
In the world of derring-do and smuggling, it just don't get any better than this. Non-stop action, highly readable language. Just a wonderful novel. I believe the author really only wrote one novel of any calibre - as is sometimes the way with greatness like this. I defy you not to love this book. I guess it's just one of those things that this book isn't as well known as Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe. But then again Disney haven't yet filmed it.
A Wonderfully crafted novel July 20, 2001 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
I don't really understand why this is branded as a children's novel. I would imagine that it would be thouroughly enjoyable for anyone, and although I did not find the vocabulary and other literary aspects challenging, I imagine someone much younger than myself would. The basic storyline is one of adventure and exicitement, but also of love and companionship, especially between BLOCK and TRENCHARD, both of whom adopt each other as family. The book is then brought to a heart-warming close. Wonderful.
