3 out of 5 stars pretty good considering!!!!   November 20, 2002

I had to dig through this book for A level French also, and at the time didn't much care for maupassant and his at times quite depressing short stories, however on completion of my A levels I read the stories again, and, they're not actually too bad when you know you don't have to write a two sided essay on the hidden meanings and such!, read them through once more, with a free mind, and see what you make of them then!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good (after analysis)   January 10, 2000

I also had to read the story as part of A Level French and well, not having much to compare it with, i think it was pretty good. I really only 'discovered' this however, after analysing the whole thing (slightly tedious, not recommended!) and realised it it quite good. The ending was OK, not what i expected but kind of got what Maup. wanted to do (i think)

2 out of 5 stars THe book was good but the ending was disappointing   November 23, 1999

When I picked up the book it wasn't in choice. I am studying it for A-Level French and had to read it as it is part of my course. It was slow to get into at the beginning but was easy to read from then on. The storyline didn't impress me at all as it was a little dull.
