3 out of 5 stars A Good Ediition   January 17, 2006

This is a competent edition of the war stories of one of France's most famous and prolific writers of the nineteenth century; Guy de Maupassant. There is a helpful and informative introduction, mostly biographical, but by no means irrelevant. The Select Bibliography is also indispensable. The stories selected for this collection are obvious ones, which all such some common threads such as more powerful enemies (often if not always the Prussians, who won the war), the futility of armed conflict, courage and patriotism. Boule de Suif is perhaps his most famous tale, and unsurprisingly begins the collection. Maupassant is not a literary genius, but his social and political comment is often subtle and provocative. From an English edition it would seem that his writing is average if not bland, but in the original French presented here it is entertaining and rich.

As with many editions, some translation is offered at the very back of the book, although any actual explanatory notes are lacking. Most versions of the English translations are offered on the web, either at the Gutenberg Project or the Online Books Page, although the best hard copy of selected stories is probably the Penguin Popular Classics version.

5 out of 5 stars Very amusing   March 15, 2001

For such a high profile author, Maupassant's vocaulary is slightly lacking, but he always elicits a laugh, when poking fun at most nations. He was writing to correct the French view that they won the Franco-Prussian War (they lost) and gets across what could be described as French arrogance very well. This edition has helpful notes in the back, but you may want an English version...
