5 out of 5 stars A TRULY ABSORBING READ...   October 18, 2008
The idea of mass observation as a tool for social history, anthropology, sociological research, whatever, is an intriguing one, the results of which are truly absorbing to read.

Mass observation began in 1937 when Tom Harrison, Charles Madge and Humphrey Jennings began their anthropological study of the British way of life. Teams of observers went out and recording everything they saw, how many men in a pub wore bowler hats, behaviour of people at war memorials, etc. Humphrey Spender took photos which became famous and Madge and Jennings organised a National Panel of volunteers who kept a detailed account of their own lives...

Fascinating glimpses back through time into the lives of the ordinary people of the 1930's and 1940's are given in the selections in this book. I loved the articles on the behaviour of people on holiday in Blackpool, pairing up, clumsy sex play, urban myths about all the boarding houses having bells they rang at eight in the morning to warn residents it was time to go back to their own rooms! etc. There is much more, mass unemployment, Churchill's defeat in 1945, rats in the NAAFI, a home in Blaina, 1943. Truly the past is another country! I loved reading this book. And some of it helped explain my parents to me!
