Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read   December 27, 2001

Having read both of the stories I can say that I am very impressed. They also illustrate how closely the films have stayed to the original story. I found the second story slightly dissapointing as it ends in tradgedy but it is still a gripping read. I would recommend that this book is read by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Love, honour, and dastardly (but heroic!) deeds   October 31, 2001

Swash-buckling Victorian heroics, set in the tiny, imaginary, central European kingdom of Ruritania. The basis of the story is that the English hero (Rudolf Rassendyll) happens to look exactly like the king (they seem to be distant cousins) - very useful when a stand-in is needed for the latter...

These books are full of atmosphere, brave and honourable heroes, lovely princesses, noble self-sacrifice, and black-hearted betrayals. The latter are really the making of these books - Ruritania has some of the best fictional villains ever!

The text dates from 1894, and so is available freely on the web. Sample it there if you like, and then buy the book to curl up with in bed :-)

I love this book so much you wouldn't believe it. I cry at the end everytime and although I've only had it for less than a month the pages are already falling out! Even if you don't like classics you will adore this-only an idiot wouldn't buy it.
