4 out of 5 stars Can you live without this book?   January 31, 2008
In terms of size to info ratio the Oxford Handbook is truly indispensible. Although you can't really learn concepts from this text it is perfect for answering questions on the spot or quickly reviewing what you are presented with on the cards. Keep it close to hand!

5 out of 5 stars Cheese and Onion   December 14, 2006

Undobtably the 'must have' book for clinicals, ideally suited to general medical / general surgical firms but useful everywhere.

It is not, by any means, a comprehensive textbook - for that Kumar & Clark or even 'mini Kumar' is far superior - what this book excells at is being a ready reference with the essential details of practically every condition you're likely to see.

As well as being a straight forward medical reference, the book contains a preface which covers subjects such as how to deal with death, breaking bad news and how to survive house jobs as well as concepts like QALY's and epidemiology.

My one gripe with this book is that the section on surgery is so thin. I appreciate that it's medicine not surgery, but in light of the poor state of the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery, a more comprehensive section would be appreciated.

In summary, a book that is, alongside the salt & vinegar, essential for any clinical medical student.

5 out of 5 stars A Medical Must   February 23, 2006

This excellent mini-reference book should be on every doctor's desk, or in every hospital doctor's white coat pocket, everywhere.

The depth and breadth of the medical conditions covered is comprehensive, and provides superb introductions to, or reminders of, many illnesses and diseases.

5 out of 5 stars Do people pay for this book?   February 16, 2006

I have found that the MDU / MPS etc are only too keen to give this book away for free when you join up with them at medical school. Wouldn't bother paying for it until you reach the end of your time at medical school and have lost your original copy. I have seemed to have accumulated about eight different Oxford Handbooks of varying types through freebies. Buy the other mini book - is it kumar and clark?

5 out of 5 stars Get You Through Life   February 23, 2005

This is the internationally renowned, megatastic book to beat all books when it comes to doing your job as a doctor. It has all the prerequisites necessary; it's concise, it has all the information you need to identify , and manage all manner of complaints and all in a pocket size book. Other books sit on the shelf and gather dust whereas this will stick with you for your formative years when you are still figuring out the gaps in your education. Nothing else will ever come close except for a new edition perhaps.
