5 out of 5 stars a must for lovers of the Old Masters' art   December 1, 2003

Far from concentrating on his "excesses" and his "hobnobbing with the famous and infamous" this book is actually mostly about Eric Hebborn's making and career. (Some excesses are hinted at but one has to be quite prudish to get shocked.) The book starts with his early childhood (which is interesting enough, even if the author does not describe his early studies in detail), goes on to tell how he tramped through continental Europe (the Netherlands particularly impressed him) to Rome where he attended a college and enjoyed his life (see excesses), and then focuses on the establishment of his art dealer's shop in Italy and his subsequent career (here the "famous and infamous" come in).
The book contains many photographs with Hebborn's pictures "in the style of Master x" and often also shows the originals from which they evolved.
It also gives some details about the techniques of producing "new Old Masters" and tells a lot about the customs of art dealing.
Taken all together, the book makes really very interesting reading for anybody interested in Old Masters' art beyond occasionally visiting a museum.
