5 out of 5 stars A Loving account of a son and his legendary father   April 26, 2000

Groucho Marx was a genius. His son is aware of that but with genius comes flaws. This exceptional account of growing up with Groucho Marx does not shy away from exposing the flaws in the man's character. He was an un-reconstructed sexist who loved women he was a tea-totaller who drove his wives to alcohol. He was a comic Genius who yearned to be a respected writer. He felt that was never given yet his letters sit in the library in Washington D.C. this book also tells of the other brothers from Chicos drunken gambleing to Harpos loving family man. (the author says the only time he saw his famously bitter and hard father cry was at Harpos death)

The love the author had for his Father is realised with anecdotes throughout(Yes Groucho really WAS like that!) highly amusing and still quoted by lesser comedians.

This is tempered by the last few chapters when, suffering from dementia, Groucho was exploited by unscrupulous "Friends"

This doesn't spoil for one second this highly enjoyable and often laugh-out-loud account of the greatest comedian of the last century. Every Marxist should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars A well told story of life with an eccentric father   June 22, 1999
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Arthur Marx gives a very good account of his upbringing and life with his father Groucho Marx. No other book about Groucho gives such an insight into his character. Groucho's eccentricities are brilliantly transcribed and very readable. It chronicles the Marx Brothers rise to the top of their profession and concludes with the sad tale of a comic genius being unscrupulously used to make money at any price.

Well worth the money !!!
