NOT THE BEST BALDACCI September 13, 2008 David Baldacci has written several fine thrillers including "Last Man Standing" and "Absolute Power". "Total Control" has several of the same features, notably a complex plot whose contours only become clear as the reader moves further into the book. Unfortunately, the writing just isn't as sharp as in Baldacci's better works. In particular, the characters are less well drawn and behave in irritatingly improbable ways. This makes it hard to care about them, or how the conundrums set up by the author are resolved. Unlike his earlier works, I found it a real challenge to finish.
For: complex, puzzling plot. Against: not gripping enough.
Superb Gripping! July 17, 2008 I am enjoying this book so much I just felt I had to leave a review even though I have not yet finished it! This is completely addictive and gripping from the first few pages - be prepared for some serious sleep deprivation because once you start this you will not be able to put it down!
Well recommended!
A Page Turner October 7, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was lent to me by a person who knew I loved reading Grisham. Well they were right. This is another book which is a page turner. If this is Baldacci's style, I will be reading all of his works.
In this book we watch as a typical American family is faced with the greed of a powerful corporation. You have a husband who is an executive at an technology firm. And his wife, a mother and attorney of the firm working on an important merger of two companies. One of which is the one he works for. The husband is working on making enough money so his wife can be a stay-at-home mother. Then he disapears with a cloud of alegations over his head. and his wife is left to clear his name.
This book has all the excitment you would expect in a thriller. And you will turn the pages fast, looking to see what happens next. And even though you know there is no way she could posibbly beat the odds she is up against in real life, you will stay engrossed in this story.
Poor stuff September 27, 2007 I've read and enjoyed books by this author in the past, but this effort is just dreadful. The only purpose the book's cardboard characters seem to serve is to drag out the paper-thin plot so that Baldacci can reach the word-count specified in his contract with the publisher. I kept hoping that Mr B would lead his idiotic 'heroine' to a an unexpected but very much deserved sticky ending. No such luck.
This One is a Real Thriller September 18, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
David Baldacci attended law school at the University of Virginia, and went on to work as a trial lawyer, and later as a corporate lawyer, in Washington, D.C. He is now a full-time writer whose best selling novels include Absolute Power, The Winner, The Simple Truth and Saving Faith. He lives in Virginia with his wife and two children.
David Baldacci is now at the forefront of the current crop of thriller writers and in my book certainly deserves to be there. His storylines are thoughtful and his characters well rounded and totally believeable. He writes consistently well, something that not all authors achieve. Many having peaks and troughs in their writing careers. Some in fact having only one good book in them. Not so with David Baldacci, whose books always sell well and never (as far as I am concerned) disappoint.
This book revolves around a young executive who is about to disappear, leaving behind a wife who has the unenviable job of sorting out the lies he has told from the truth. An air investigation squad would like to know why the plane he was in suddenly dropped from the sky. The startling truth behind his disappearance raises all sorts of issues, not least a plot to murder the country's most powerful individual . . .
