EVA March 15, 2008 This book was bought for my daughter and I read it because I had run out of things to read! It was so unique, thought provoking, frightening (not in the "horror" sense but in the sense that it made me really think about the path we are forging towards our future) and is one of the few books that I will never forget.
Also, you know how normally when you read a book, if you are honest, you know where it is going...Harry Potter will inevitably kill voldermort, the heroine will inevitably end up with the hero (but not until it looks like they have lost eachother) and books generally need to follow a pattern to be satisfying...if Harry hadn't won it would have ruined the whole series and if the man and woman didn't get together then what was the point? Well, this didn't follow an expected pattern and the story led you where you didn't expect it to, yet was still satisfying in its conclusion. It is refreshing to read a piece of fiction so wonderfully written, poignant and "real".
Required reading for everyone! June 15, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This wonderful book goes beyond the normal sci-fi book into the realms of social commentary, but without pushing it down one's throat. The story really makes us think about how we would react, being thrust into someone else's body, unasked and unable to do anything about it, nor could the donor! It questions the rights of parents, doctors, sociologists, scientists to use their power in such borderline cases. The way this is handled is touchingly sensitive and surprisingly low-key for a book aimed at this age-group; it allows the reader to form his/her own conclusions, which generally arrive at the same point that author is aiming for. The ending is is especially well done...Far better than many mainstream science fiction novels - this rates with the best of Sheri Tepper or Connie Willis. *****
absolutely brilliant August 2, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first read this book when I was about 13yrs of age, 6yrs later and I still remember the enjoyment I got from the story, which had me totally hooked from start to finish. Its a definate must for people of all ages as it triggers the imagination. Its amazing storyline, though unusual was made very believable and made me feel all kinds of emotions as I imagined how Eva coped with being made different.
