My Favourite So Far! June 27, 2008 I really enjoyed this book and I don't know whether the author's sense of humour has grown on me or whether this book was particulary funny, but I found myself laughing a lot. I particularly loved the mental image of Mma Makutsi as a "warthog with glasses, wearing green shoes with blue linings", as thought up by Mma Ramotswe.
This is a real "feel good" book and there's so much that's good about it - the humour, the very full characters, the philosphising and the description of the Botswanan landscape and its people.
Undemanding March 19, 2008 An enjoyable book. Not a lot actually happens; by the end of the book almost everyone is pretty much back where they started, but older, wiser and perhaps even a little happier. A gentle, undemanding narrative, with some nice moments of character observation.
Mama Ramotswe to the rescue! February 17, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Alexander McCall Smith is excellent and the whole series of books is wonderful. This isn't as good as the first, although if you love an off-beat, well-told tale then you could do a lot worse than read this. It's good 'loo-reading' (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). Apparently he can write 1000 words an hour, which is more words than most people use in the same space of time. I think that is why the plots hang together so well - there is a good sense of continuity.
A wonderful experience, as always May 27, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Adjoa Andoh does the text justice. Her voice makes the wonderful words of Alexander McCall Smith truly come to life. It is a delight to have this story read to you. Sit back and enjoy.
As charming as the rest April 5, 2006 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
One of the most delightfully charming series of books around. Heartwarming characters and a beautiful depiction of life in Botswana. It's always a wonderful feeling visiting these characters, both familiar and comforting and catching up with their lives. This is truly one of the best in the series, though it is hard to choose. Full of humour, morals from another land and a bit of detective work too, you'd be hard pushed to find a better series of books with such endearing characters.
