after two boys i wanted a girl! December 22, 2007 Well i did alot of reaserch on this matter first! and this seemed like the best book to me. I charted for three months and did everything the book told me too to get a girl! and 9 months later she was born! i was totally shocked! as i expected a boy anyway! i dont know if it was luck or not? but its worth having ago, as long as you dont pin all your hopes on it!
It might work! December 2, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After we had our daughter I thought it would be nice to have a son next, and we followed all the advice.... and I got pregnant the first month, after only one act of unprotected sex, exactly on the day I ovulated (had been charting for a few months whilst still using barrier methods. And yes, he is a boy!
I would say this - firstly, if its important to you, read all the books on the subject so you have a full picture - some different things can work in harmony with each other. Also I suspect it just tips the balance slightly, and secondly its totally not suitable for you if it takes you longer to get pregnant or if you are a little older(esp if trying to conceive girl) as it would take longer to get pregnant.
Although I'd have a slight preference for a girl for number 3 I will be leaving it to chance!
BEWARE - dangerous book October 9, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book stole a year of my life. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. In fact I would recommend that people avoid it.
The science of it sounds plausible and perhaps for some it does work. It's not that i'm saying that Dr S's method doesn't work but that the practice of trying to determine your baby's gender is flawed. People have been trying to do this for centuries (think of Henry VIII...). I say: throw away this book, bin your gender agendas and be grateful for what you get.
If you're trying for a girl, which I was, he recommends stopping having sex up to three days before your ovulation. If, like me, you're in your early-to-mid 30s this can mean you're trying and trying for months. If you read other fertility experts (which I have, now) the chance of you getting pregnant at all with this method are extremely low. Dr S doesn't mention this in his book. So I lost a year of my fertility calendar with this rubbish. A waste of time, a waste of good eggs!
Don't do it. Just go with what you get and be thankful.
Interesting read but didn't work for us! February 14, 2004 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
This book is a fascinating read to learn about e.g., the characteristics of male and female sperm and how you COULD PERHAPS try and influence the gender of your baby in many ways.We were hoping for a boy (which is claimed to be much easier to target than a girl if you follow instructions) and followed the advice set out in this book very carefully with temperature readings (BEFORE getting out of bed in the morning!), etc. but still ended up with a very lovely and active baby girl (perhaps she came from a very fast female sperm who just made it there before the boys) whom we absolutely adore! We are not holding out much hope for these methods for our next child, but perhaps I will consult the book again - why not? it may work second time around! But don't hang all your hopes on it.
Use with Caution!! July 11, 2002 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
We tried this method twice to try for a daughter. I had been charting for years so I knew my cycle well. We followed his advice to the letter and are the proud parents of 2 sons! I would advise people to do their research. I have found other methods that say to do the opposite of Dr. Shettles. So if you want to try just for fun go for it but know that you may not get what you want.
