5 out of 5 stars oedipus in the middle ages   June 12, 2003

Mann re-writes the medieval legend about a child of an incestuous relationship who marries his mother, develops into a small creature crawling on an island and is later, after seventeen years, elected as Pope Gregory. You think, this is unbelievable and sad? Once you get used to the ancient language - a mix of medieval English, Dutch and French -, you will find it very convincing and amusing!

5 out of 5 stars Covers pennance and shame, but not necessarily religion   January 14, 2000

Easily my favourite book, fantastically imaginative in its writing adopting an archaic style but still being Mann's easist to read book. Deals with old fashioned concepts such as shame, sin and self forgiveness. I re-read it often and have given it to a couple of friends who have loved it too. It was a great shame for me to read that Mann himself thought little of his work.
