The Holy Grail of Comedy February 13, 2008 Originally produced at a time before the advent of not only DVD but also video recorders, `Monty Python and the Holy Grail' was issued as a script book for those people who wanted to enjoy it in the comfort of their own home. The book also contains as curiosities the initial draft of the script showing how it was improved upon during production. Also included is the production costs, I imagine only American film producers would know how funny they are.
The Holy Grails script is of a consistent quality and every sketch (used deliberately rather than more traditional scenes) is a success. Sketches such as the Black Knight, the Three Headed Knight, Tim the Enchanter and the Knights that say Nee are amongst the best sketches of not only Python lineage but of all time.
And now for something completely different July 24, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A useful book when not in the vicinity of a VCR or DVD player, however it is merely a transcript of the film with no extras. It could perhaps be improved with some stills to liven it up.However it serves its purpose well but is perhaps only of real interest to a massive python fan.
Try not to smile while reading this book! September 12, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even though it has been about two years since I've watched the movie, this book brings back every memory of it! The script is superb and if you've seen the movie, you'll visualize each scene as it happens while reading this book. Even though the book doesn't contain any 'extras', it's worth every penny - the script will have you in stitches! "What, ridden on a horse?" ... "You're using two empty halves of coconuts and banging them together." Need I say more? :)
Monty Python, Holy Grail film script! September 12, 2002 This is a fantastic book, not only containing the script, but also photos from the film, sketches, diagrams and out takes, and old copies of the original script, absolutely fantastic, highly recommended!
Rare look at the metamorphosis of a script April 26, 2001 It's rare that you get to see a script come together from first draft to final product and all the stages in between. Some of the ideas, dialogue and sketches which never made it to the film are as funny as the very silly cinematic Grail hunt would prove to be, a comedy classic. Enjoy seeing the creative process in action, reading your favorite bits, and even spot a few bits that were to become sketches in the fourth season. A must for any Python fan.
