The real Scotland and 'why' it is as it is July 5, 2003 If you want a full understanding of the issues that affect the continuing existence of this nation within a nation, 300 years after its incorporation into Europe's once leading unitary state, then McCrone will debunk your myths. Some mistakes (e.g. the collapse of the Conservative Party wasn't due to a swing to Labour), but an honest attempt to put a complete nation in a book. One for the serious scholar, but still readable. We need a second edition, Dr McCrone, post-home rule and to explain the rise of the Greens and Socialists, and the decline of Labour. And its not all irrelevant jockocentric stuff, McCrone tries to put Scotland - an exception to apparent rules - as an exemplar to understand nations and nationalisms better.
This book has much accalim - but it is a little dry February 28, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Understanding Scotland was first introduced to me in a first year university sociology course. Seemingly it was 'essential reading' to understand Scotland, not as an ill-fitting state within the British Isles but rather as fitting with 'postmodern' era. Since this time, I have encountered several recommendations of this book, in a number of different situations. I have then tried to read this book for a second, third, forth time but it fails to sustain my interest. Boringly dry, read it if you need some sleep.
