Concise and practical, it still manages to expand on certain subjects within the AQA Biology text book. It also clarifies areas of the text book that, in my view, come across as poorly written. The questions are also well structured, with direct answers, although I did not notice a mistake in the answer for Module 2 question 5(a). The diagram clearly shows Prophase, but the answer says it's Anaphase. Other than that though, this book is an essential buy for anyone studing AS Biology.
Best buy of your life February 7, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As the title says BUY IT if you are taking as or a level biolgy. It contains everything you need to pass.
Really good book just a few problems November 4, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a REALLY good revision guide for the specification that was recommended to me from a link off a website. I was really glad I bought it because it covers each section of the syllabus on a double page, presenting clearly all the key facts, which really helps people like me who need to shorten their class notes! The author has clearly stuck to the syllabus closely and gives you the raw facts that you really need to know. This is the kind of book I think you should get if you haven't started revising until last minute for your exams! The only problem I have with this book is that it's completely black and white so if you're a visual learner and need colours to learn properly, you might want to get your highlighters ready. However if that doesn't bother you - BUY THIS BOOK!
A really good revision guide. July 3, 2004 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer, I thought this book was really good! I didn't buy it in time to use it for module 4, which I took in January - but I'd recommend that you do if you can. It would have really helped me. I used the book for my module 5 revision, it was invaluable. It contains all the information you need, and I really liked the fact that you know everything in it could come up on the exam - I just learned the lot. It compared well with another revision guide I bought that confused me with too many examples that I wasn't sure were necessary, and I didn't know if I had to learn. The only problem I really came across with this was the carbon cycle diagram was a bit simplistic, but it was well explained. I also used it for my synoptic paper - it doesn't have an actual section, but there are notes all the way through that are designed to help. The module 5 synoptic notes told you which previous concepts linked in with the new ideas, so I had a little list of AS knowledge to revise. For my module 6 synoptic revision I basically revised from this book and the AS book from this range, as you don't need to know any more detail than they contain. There are also some little synoptic tips in the back of the book, and an example essay plan. It turned out to be on the same subject as the essay in my actual exam!! (osmosis) Basically a great revision guide. Diagrams are not that pretty, but generally quite informative and easy to understand.
okay-but i've seen better April 21, 2002 9 out of 17 found this review helpful
this book contains material for module 4 and 5 of the syllabus-i thought it would contain material for the final, synoptic unit- but it doesn't. in terms of value for money, dont bother cos if you've already taken module 4 in January and aren't retaking you only need half the book. the layout is pretty boring, with few diagrams and the writing is painfully small. okay, so it contains the info, but ive seen better guides.
