One of the Most Invaluable Books March 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The title of this invaluable book speaks for itself and it most certainly provides important insights and powerful lessons about protecting oneself and one's children from getting into the reach of the deadly predators in our world. Not only it gives great insights, but it would strongly help one to not to fall into the "trap."
I've enjoyed the author's writing style and she did a wonderful job on describing how the predators operate, which helps us to prepare any eventually and avoid ourselves and our children to become victims.
I do believe that we should educate ourselves about the evil in our world, despite of what we think. Knowing about the danger and being aware of such danger can help one to be better protected.
Both Salter's book and Gavin De Becker's "The Gift of Fear" are great books for one to be educated about the predators and killers and about protecting oneself from them. Gaining knowledge from these books and more can certainly protect us.
Highly recommended.
Essential reading for all parents! January 28, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The title of this book is not one that jumps out at you and says read me, as it is a book that casts light on a dark area of society, one that most prefer to ignore or shut out. Unfortunately, that plays straight in to the hands of the predators, whom we wish never to have to deal with. But the phenomenon is real enough and Gavin de Becker gives some startling statistics in the foreword to the book: The Justice department estimates that there is one child molester per square mile in the US.
And the problem is that they don't look any different from the rest of the population.
As Anna Salter says: "In short, there may be little harm in holding generalized expectations that the world will treat us well - so long as we prepare for a world that may not."
She does a great job at describing what these predators in our midst look for and how they operate, which is essential knowledge in order to take steps to minimise risks of ever encountering one.
I would recommend this book to any parent as the practical advice given therein can be what stops your child from being a victim of one of these predators. Knowledge does protect!
A Must read...Protect yourself and your children May 30, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
`Predators' is an incredibly readable and fascinating look at paedophiles, sadists, rapists, psychopaths and other sex offenders. As well as looking at the different personality types, typical behaviours and crimes, it will give you practical advice about how to protect yourself and your children.
There are sections in the book that make disturbing reading (I found the section on sadism and the ways in which professionals are manipulated particularly difficult reading) but Salter writes with such passion that she carries you through. There is also a section on grooming (and detail about how prison officers) can be groomed which was a definite eye-opener.
It is difficult to underestimate how important this book is, and how it will change your perception of the situations you find yourself in everyday. A must read for professionals, psychology students, anyone working with offenders and everyone who has kids.
Highly recommended, I'd give it more than five stars if I could.
A real eye opener October 13, 2003 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
This really is a fantastic true but scary book. Every parent or child carer should read this. Some parts were very descriptive however necessary, especially when talkng about sex offenders. Everyone needs to read the last chapter if nothing else. It should be given out at hospitals to parents who have just had a baby perhaps then children might stand a chance when faced with a sex offender.
