Useless waffle for dummies October 28, 2008

When they say "dummies", they don't mean a jargon-free beginners guide but rather that you're a dummy if you waste your money on one of their joke books. You get the feeling that one of Wiley's in-house writers has spent ten minutes interviewing a music teacher and then gone away and padded that scant amout of information out into this waffling textbook. This seems to be an exercise in how to make 1 sentence-worth of advice last for an entire chapter. And that advice is often pretty crumby. "Have a pen and paper handy in case you think of an idea" spans almost 2 chapters - seriously! Other pearls of wisdom include: "write out a series of random notes and just see what happens", "major keys are happy, minor keys are sad". They make the list of contents last for a good 50 pages by giving a brief description of each chapter - in the style of, "here's what we've got coming up in this half of the show'. And the text is crammed into a narrow column down the centre of each page and very often that column contains nothing more than a sentence and a bar of two of a simple melody. You get the feeling that the actual useful information in this book could fit into a leaflet. Don't encourage these people by giving them your money
