Judgmental and Boring June 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is the kind of book that could make you not want to visit a place just by it's sheer negativity.
Please understand that it is the author who is negative and boring, not the place.
His dry, whining style fails to accurately capture the warmth of the place or the easy-going nature of the people.
If it were not for KNOWING that the place is wonderful and awe-inspiring, I might have been convinced by his chauvinist, arrogant and bigoted observations to skip the journey entirely.
This book is a painful read with no soul. Don't bother buying it, as you'd learn more about New Zealand in a bottle of Oyster Bay wine.
annoying little man February 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
having travelled NZ i realised early on in this book that this is the type of arrogant and irksome of tourists that kiwis dislike.his constant whining of situations that weren`t exactly mirroring his american homeland drove me insane.the most blood boiling of books i have ever read.try a different book and get a real feel for the most beautiful country you will ever visit
Author: okay. Book: Better. January 26, 2008 This is a good read if you like NZ or want to learn about NZ, but beware an author that initially isn't particularly likeable! Worth reading...
Spend wisely... February 9, 2007 Towards the end of this book, the author writes "I brought Jeff's book to read at breakfast , and was entertained by his version of the scandal, but liked him less and less after every chapter". I know the feeling. The writing is not bad in itself, though a little more editorial control might have reduced some of the repetition (count the "stone-age cannibals" for yourself if you really must buy it!). It's just that as a narrative of a journey there simply isn't enough of interest or educational value to compensate for the pitiful "Look at me! Look at me!" self-obsession of the narrator.
For an altogether more fresh and human travelogue of New Zealand I'd recommend Joe Bennett (or Andrew Stevenson at a push) - although granted you won't learn so much about farmstays and homestays. On the plus side, it's a really nice front cover...
Try and keep awake... September 20, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not one of the best NZ books. This reads as a tedious journey around NZ, making me wonder if it was the same country that I'd lived in! However, one of the best things about this book is that its writen in a style that makes you think you could do better yourself. Why I should want to know that at the end of a day that the author sits down with his laptop and does some writing, I'm still not sure.
