5 out of 5 stars Classic Book on the Middlegame   July 22, 2007

I read this book many years ago and feel it helped me significantly improve my understanding of how to handle middlegame positions. Whilst it is true that Keres analysis is superior to Kotov's, the quality of all the material is good and it should be remembered that Keres was a far stronger player than Kotov. That said, now that I have returned to chess after a break of many years, it is in particular the chapter by Kotov on how to attack in positions of opposite side castling that I remember most. I would be surprised if most club players could not take several nuggetts of wisdom from this book and use it to their advantage during their games. It should also be noted that Harry Golombek's introduction is of a high quality, as was all his work, I had the priviledge of meeting Golombek some years ago, I think his dedication to chess showed in all his works, most notably those on Capablanca and Reti.

3 out of 5 stars Notation Errors   August 19, 2006
2 out of 5 found this review helpful

The book is essencially good and does help in improvement of play as it is designed to do. However on page 36 and page 37 there appears to be errors in the print or original notation.

Move 7. for white, neither bishop cannot move to either bishops 2 square, but can move to Q2.
Move 24. for white, the notation reads B x P, but the bishop has no threat on any of blacks pawns after taking the previous pawn. The notation should read (I assume) B x R.
I havn't read the rest of the book yet, but must say I'm a little dissapointed, and I'm just hoping that non of the game examples have uncorrectable or undiagnosable errors.

4 out of 5 stars Middlegame explained as it should be.   February 22, 2000

This is an interesting read which inspired many new lines of thought in my play. Kotov's chapters are concise and well illustrated with games, and I'd say essential knowledge for the advanced tournament player.

5 out of 5 stars Good value for the money. Advanced book.   September 21, 1998

I'll not make this sound like an advertisement, but this book is really great value for the money (thanks again to Dover). The book has 5 chapters, one by Golombeck (the translator) which is worth reading, but not much more. The rest are 4 perls by Kotov and Keres. This 4 chapters handle the topics: how to attack the king (depending on the pawn srtuctures and on the castles), how to play whit typical pawn structures (blocked center...) [both by Kotov]; how to defend actively in inferior positions, and how to do analysis (both by Keres, which was a fanatic correspondece player).

5 out of 5 stars Good guideline   May 13, 1998

This is a good book. I think each chapter deserves a praise, especially Keres' two chapters about Defense and Analysis. Comparatively, Keres' chapters are better than Kotov's. The latter's chapters are just like a textbook, not as vivid as Keres'. Also, Keres' analysis is far better than Kotov's. Anyway, if you have played more than 100 games and are eager to improve, read this book. By the way, if you read this book, find other cheap and good books published by Dover at Amazon. I really appreciate Dover's contribution to chess fans.
