a beautiful, inspiring book February 25, 2007 This is a really beautiful book showing some great homes people have fashioned in paradise. I flick through it every now and again to dream and plan holidays. I fell in love with the book after seeing taman bebek villas in Ubud, Bali and then going to stay there for a week. It was just as elegant in real life.
Pour yourself a pina colada and enjoy! January 3, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book is a sheer delight! The author captures the essence of the sinfully sumptuous tropical living and describes the background to each house featured in an imitable fashion. An enormous amount of research and love must have gone into the production of such a wonderful book and leafing through the pages you gain access to the best houses in the tropics in the manner you would watching "Through the Keyhole". The photographs are not merely a catalogue of pictures of houses but rather portraits taken lovingly at different times of the day. The houses are bathed in sunlight more often than not but this is no gaudy hotel brochure although I won't be surprised if the first thing you do after putting this book down is to book yourself a holiday to the tropics. Tim Street-Porter has done justice to the tone of each house and the arrangement of photos highlights this and the fact that he must have spent days not just photographing but also actually trying to understand the nature of each place and the intentions behind the creators of these mansions. For instance among photos of a beautiful house built by a colonial merchant in Sri Lanka you will also find a photo of the small island on which it is built, the place where the man had received the inspiration to create his home. To accentuate the pink theme in Isabella Goldsmiths home in Mexico, Tim has surrounded the photos of the house with pictures of Isabellas pink flower filled gardens. The photos of Made Wijaya, the famous Indonesian landscape architects home in Bali have mostly been taken from his lush and romantic garden which again accentuates the fact that the garden and the house were created to share the limelight equally. I grew up in the tropics and this book is a tonic for me on a dull winters day. It has also been a source of inspiration to my father whos planning building his retirement home.
