4 out of 5 stars Stylish spacesavers   March 11, 2007
Although this book features almost exclusively New York Apartments, they are all stylishly done up and offer real space saving solutions. I would aspire to the style most places are done, and find this book a lot more helpful than the Taschen Series as these are more real-life designs that can be done on a budget. Definitely a book to keep, I have just put my order in.

It is often difficult to translate ideas from books which show huge American interiors, especially when ( in all the magazines I read)they think 1500 square feet is small?!!
In the UK being a small(and shrinking Island) we don't have the luxury of space............so thinking in terms of my own 700 sq ft and applying some of the ideas was interesting to say the least.

You need to be devoid of junk and clutter, but there are one or two inovative ideas that can be adpated and translated to fit the tiny British home.

As someone who has studied Interior Design for many years, I think the biggest problem we have in the UK is that we are too scared to "personalize" our space, because we are worried about the impact on the re-sale value.
This is clearly not a worry for those featured in this book and maybe we should just relax a bit more and enjoy and personalize our own space for our enjoyment?.....................and then if and when, paint it all in pale neutral tones to sell, & then crank up the ideas and colour in the "new house"?!!.

Having bought this book looking for ideas to 'expand' my tiny one-bedroom flat, it missed the mark. It focuses on re-designing floor plans to maximise space rather than nifty storage ideas and double-function furniture.

The book's drawback is that it's written for an American audience. American apartments appear to be big, purpose built and devoid of 'original features'. None of the concerns of listed buildings with odd-shaped conversions hacked out during times of property boom. In addition, the Americans seem to love beds in their lounge that flip up against the wall - hey presto, no need for a bedroom. Great if you are obsessively tidy, but convert your 1 bed flat into a studio this side of the pond and you are looking at financial suicide.

However that said, it's refreshing to view real-life, functional homes encompassing a diversity of taste (though not all of it good!) rather than a designer show-home. All in all, a fascinating read but not easy to put into practice.

5 out of 5 stars A book to aspire to be in   November 11, 2003

As someone who can unfortunately currently only aspire to live in a studio apartment with a nighttime, or daytime rooftop view of the Empire State Building, this book is a find. Wonderful, innovative uses of space (for example, beds which roll back into walls), beautiful views and buildings make for an excellent read. An essential purchase if you dream about living large in a small space.

4 out of 5 stars Food for thought for the flat dweller   August 16, 2003

Interesting spaces from a 100 sq. ft student room up to a 1000 sq. ft. apartment.

An interesting foreword covers some more theoretical territory, but much of the rest of the text is too breathless and cheesy.

The best thing is the clear photographs which for once look like places that are lived in and loved (even stylishly cluttered!) The acccent is urban, and modern american in particular, with plenty of different styles and lots of character.
