2 out of 5 stars Stirring Stuff, indeed!   October 17, 2008
I have not yet finished this book, but the plot/style is clear. As stated elsewhere, the author has obviously gone for a WW 2 "Sharpe". The only surprising thing about this is, why didn't someone else do exactly that years ago?
Weird.
This is the first book I have read written by James Holland and I like it. He has done an excellent job in creating Sgt. Tanner, and I like the bloke already. I am sure he's going to get into allsorts of trouble, before the book (series, hopefully?) is finished. And when WW 2 is over, the author can take us back to India, exactley where Sharpe started out soldering as well... Good for the Xmas tree! And with a bit of luck, although Tanner will be a little long in the tooth by then, off to Borneo?
We shall see.
Two little niggle's though on historical correctness: I do believe that Bren ammo is exactley the same as rifle (Lee Enfield) ammo and I do not think that Jerry had Tiger (the author uses the term: Panzer VI) tanks during the invasion of Norway, in 1940.
I thought this was a great read, indeed meant for men of a certain age and I can't wait for part 2. If the author gets his teeth stuck into the characters and the matter, we could have struck gold here!
James Holland: good luck and keep up the good work.

I really enjoyed this book. Great action scenes set in a fascinating and horrific period of our history.
Jack Tanner and his sidekick are brilliant characters and you'll find yourself cheering them along as they attempt to thwart those nasty Nazis.
The pace is terrific and the scenery incredibly vivid.
This is an incredibly entertaining WW2 action book and I eagerly anticipate the next one. Hope I don't have to wait to long, Mr Holland?

4 out of 5 stars Commando books for grown ups - without the cartoons!   July 8, 2008

Or perhaps more for men of a "certain age". It had to happen I suppose a "Sharpe in WWII" and to be honest this doesn't disappoint. Mr Holland is well known for his previous works on WWII so the research has to be taken for granted and his previous work showed he has an aptitude for storytelling, but you know I think there is just a hint of "formula" about this but fair does to him for getting in there as it were and I will certainly be looking out for the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Great fast paced page turner taht has it all.   June 30, 2008

This is a great start to what i hope will be long series. Jack Tanner is that breed to hero that so many fail to get on to a page in a believeable form but James manages with style. The plot has more twists than a rife barrel never disspointing. The description of his action sequences are brillent and brings to life the real cahos of battle.
His obvious prowess in history shows at every turn. I really liked this and cannot recommend it highly eneough.

5 out of 5 stars A very good boys own type adventure   June 13, 2008

I have long wished that there was a WW2 equivilant to the Sharpe series and I think this comes pretty close. It has a good fast paced action story and James Holland has obviously well researched the period. For people interested in WW2 it makes a nice alternative to the many non-fiction books on the period. Overall I found this book a great read and hope that this is the start of a long running series.
