Much better to buy Angelina October 5, 2008 Great if you want your kids to think you can become a ballerina - including twirling on your toes - without going to ballet class ever in your life. If this were supposed to be a complete fairy tale then fair enough, it's make believe, but there's the "ugh" moral factor lifted straight out of an Angelina story - I might add - of being nice to friends and not getting cross with them for stealing the part etc. So the author needs to make up her mind- is this a true to life moral take or complete fantasy! I would far rather read Angelina ballerina to my 3 year old as the first story says "you need to work hard for years and years and then you can become a great ballerina". I prefer the truth!
It's ok August 18, 2008 One of the earlier Princess Poppy books, this follows the usual plot pattern of this series. The book lays out the theme of the story, Poppy does something rude or selfish, before redeeming herself at the end.
This book is ballet themed, and to her credit, the author does not use one of the "usual" ballets (Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty) and opts for Coppelia, and the moral of the story is loosely about being happy for one's friends even if they inadvertadly usurp your own success. Nice artwork too.
One curious observation (which is in a way central to the whole point of the story): My understanding of Coppelia is that the prima ballerina plays Swanilde, not Coppelia. Janey Louise Jones seems to think differently. Who knew?
PRINCESS POPPY BOOKS May 30, 2008 My little girl who is 3, absolutely LOVES these books! They remind me of the books I used to read 'Milly Molly Mandy' with regards to the structure, they all live in the village lots of family members in the stories, a map of the village and there houses at the front and the lessons learned in each story!, absolutely captavating, beautiful pictures, right length of story not too short or long for a bedtime story! Make a Excellent gift as well!.My little girl has 8 books and loves them all.You would not be disspointed.
Every little girl's dream August 7, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My daughter was given this for her 4th birthday and it has quickly become a favourite. I was initially a bit reluctant as I don't really like the whole princess/ballet thing every girl is inundated with but it's actually a really sweet story with great characters and a helpful "moral" tucked in there without being too intrusive into the story.... My daughter has since had another Princess Poppy story and I can foresee her wanting more. I think this would be perfect for most girls between 3 and 5, maybe 6. (And even my 2 year old son is quite keen!)
Princess Poppy sure fire winner May 30, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My kids adore Poppy, my son loves counting the flowers that adorn most pages, whilst my daughter just can't get enough of this friendly but fiesty little girl. It's been elevated to being read every night by request. Just like every other little girl Poppy gets bored, impatient and wants to get on, but these clever books show that there's a reward for being good. The little letter in the front of the book in its own tiny pocket is a sweet touch.
